Colonial Marines for real!
Here's an interesting article I came across in Popular Science. The short of it is that the USMC is pursuing a project that, if it reaches fruition, will allow U.S. Marines to drop in on the bad guys from space.
The benefits are it would take roughly two hours to get anywhere in the world from the U.S., there would be no problems with airspace transit rights since the proposed craft would travel beyond the fifty-mile limit that delineates national airspaces, AND it would finally give the Navy an "in" to the space program (where it belongs, but that's another debate altogether).

Go Navy! Always wondered why the AF thought that space was their domain? Kirk always used Navy traditions and anyway, one day an aircraft will also be a spacecraft.
The AF should just disolve like the lighter than air squadrons of the 1930s. They can't operate on extended voyages like the Navy.0 -

Starship Troopers...never has such an amazingly detailed and innovative book been made into such a painfully ignorant jock-flick.
Paul Verhoeven, the director, supposedly read 3 chapters of the book, got bored, and threw it away. Most of the writing team supposedly didn't even know it was based on a book, and were told to write "Aliens meets Duke Nukem, with more boobs".

EMM--I heard about this while listening to the radio a few weeks ago. It sounds fascinating. I'm just thinking about how much the weather impacts when and where a space shuttle will land. It seems like every landing time and location is adjusted and delayed and re-thought before it is executed. How will the USMC be able to take advantage of this kind of technology which is intended to turn the Infantry into a literal 9-1-1 rapid-response force when the weather would have to cooperate? It seems to me that the application would be unreliable at best. I hope to see this in my lifetime. 0 -

The mascot name "Screaming Eagles" is already in use by the 101st Airborne. That won't work out so well.
Part of the article talked about entering space from a normal fight-type vehicle. The USAF already accomplished that back in the '60s with the X-15 project, which put an American into space before Mercury.0 -

Good point about the weather. The only thing I can think of is that NASA, as a civilian agency, gets pennies for its budget. They have to make do with what they can afford.
SUSTAIN, being a military project, would be funded out the wazoo. This would hopefully result in an effective all-weather end product, or as "all-weather" as aircraft can get.

Sorry for the late reply, but I was on vacation.
First the shoulder patch that I displayed was from the movie ALIENS and I believe that they were refered to as the screaming eagles in the movie.
For the record, I ment no disrespect to the 101st Airborne0
