Discrimination Against Military Servicemen
To All Those Interested,
Recently I attempted rent storage space in Mesa, AZ at Extra Space, a nationally syndicated self storage company. I was asked if I was a military member by the clerk and informed her in the affirmative. No problem at this point; received a unit and moved in my equipment.
Two days later I received a phone call from the manager (Tiffany) who informed me she wouldn't be able to continue renting to me and I was being locked out. Access would only be permitted to remove my property. When I asked her the reason she replied, "What if your sent to Iraq and get killed? We're out your storage rent and stuck with your stuff".
Well! I thought the good folks on this site might be as outraged by this as I was and call upon them to BOYCOTT Extra Space wherever they are. If so inclined, anyone reading this might also pass the story along.

I'm not ready to call BS quite yet, but something don't seem just right. For one thing, CapnRob was retired from the Air Force as long ago as 5 January 2005. Recalled to active duty? Possible, but not likely.

To those who doubt my veracity, I hold no grudge. Scarcely believed it myself when hearing it first hand. However this is exactly what happened. I've no other axe to grind with the company; I'd had the space for two days when it occurred and I paid up front.

If anyone has received a denial from Extra Space I'd like to know that representative's name so I may have the distinct honor of calling him/her a liar.

For the record, I retired from The U.S. Air Force in October of 2000 but did NOT resign my commission. I was recalled to active duty in December of 2006. Yes, Merry Christmas captain.
I first posted this message under heading of "Discrimination Against Servicemen" then thought better of it. I re-posted under heading of "Boycott Extra Space" as I thought this more appropriate; gets the message across a little more succinctly.
My sincerest apologies if this has violated any Forum rules or offended anyone. Such was not my intent.
Upon further reflection, it occurs to me this would have been better posted in the Military sections. Would anyone have any objections to my doing so at this juncture?

Captain George, I'm not familiar with Mesa, Arizona and only marginally familiar with the Air Force, but you will have to admit that your post appears to be a bit strange on it's face.
First it is not logical for a storage company to turn down business for such a frivolous reason. Assuming Mesa is a military area, to much of their business would come from military personnel to risk losing it.
The military usually has even more support in non-military areas than military areas, so it wouldn't make sense to risk a PR disaster in the general public with a story like this getting out.
Assuming everything you say happened the way you say it did, Tiffany has a boss, the franchise owner. Did you talk to him/her? The franchise owner has a franchiser. Did you talk to him/her? If it is a military area, did you talk to the base executive officer, commanding officer, personnel officer, or any ombudsman? If it's not a military area, did you talk to the OIC of the recruiting station or any other local military representative?
If it did happen a little differently than you say it did, you might have opened yourself up to some legal problems.
On a side issue and not really related to the subject, I don't know how one would go about resigning his commission at retirement. The two things are mutually exclusive. When you resign your commission, that's equivalent to quitting your job. When you retire, you agree to remain a commissioned officer and subject to recall for the remainder of your life. We receive reduced PAY for reduced service. We DO NOT receive a pension. Recall is rare, but it does happen.0 -

Eric, if this is legit it's worse than despicable. Right now CapnRob and Tiffany are the only ones who know if it is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. There are just to many things which don't add up and to many lose ends. To deny service to an Air Force Officer because he might get killed in Iraq is nothing short of insane. Based on that logic they would have to deny service to me because I have already had one heart attack, and deny you because you operate heavy equipment and work in construction. Not to mention everyone who drives or rides in an automobile.
The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are not popular at the moment, but even the Democrats still put up the pretense of supporting the troops. The PR from something like this could be economic suicide.
CapnRob turned down an opportunity to talk about this on two local TV news affiliates in favor of breaking the news to the tired old farts and young hotheads on GunBroker.

This has nothing to do with the incident but it's just something which doesn't sit well with me. CapnRob retired from the Air Force as a Captain (O-3) in October 2000 and was recalled to active duty in December 2006. He says he was recalled because he didn't "resign his commission" when he retired.
I know of two ways to retire as a Captain (O-3). First is a disability retirement which would disqualify him for recall. The other is to have enough enlisted and commissioned service combined to have twenty or more years total active service before he was passed over twice for Major (O-4). That would probably be roughly twelve years enlisted service and the rest commissioned service. I can't imagine anyone with that much enlisted and commissioned service not knowing how the system works. It could happen, but as I said, it just doesn't sit well with me.

Everybody on the retired list or in the Fleet Reserve is subject to recall. Even disability retired are eligible if the disability is fixed. When I said he didn't understand how the system works, I was referring to when he said he was recalled because he didn't resign his commission when he retired.
If you resign a commission and the resignation is accepted, that is separation. There is nothing left to retire from. When you retire as a commissioned officer, you are a commissioned officer until you die. Much like an enlisted man retains his rank/rate, just in a retired or Fleet Reserve status.0 -
Call Tiffany and ask that she put that in writing, company letterhead prefferably. Then take a little trip to base legal or your favorite legal beagle and have at it. With that letter in hand, you'd probably end up owning at least part of the company and Tiffany would no doubt be doing something else. 0 -
If true, it sounds to me more like a manager tiffany thing, than a company policy. I'd say the coporte would have manager tiffany's arse if they recive info on it. 0 -

This is pretty common around large military bases. I know of quite a few examples.
For a long time Cordes Dodge in Lawton, OK. was placed off limits by the Commander of Ft. Sill for treating soldiers badly.
I was involved with getting an insurance company placed off limits to soldiers for discriminatory practices.
At least in the Army these things get reported to an office which is attached to JAG. I am sure the Air Force has a similiar setup, I would check into it.
In the 90's I was stationed at Ft. Drum NY. There were signs in the neighboring communities in people yards saying things like "SOLDIERS GO HOME"0 -
