Memorable driving moments------
Memorable moment: The Truck Driver (me) and the LEO (Alabama State Trooper).
Drove 18-wheelers (oof and on) from about 1964-1973----no AC, before CB's, etc.
About 9:00pm one evening I was "hauling a$$" (empty 40' flatbed) driving an International Transtar cab-over----running about 70-75 mph (55 mph zone) on an expressway into Birmingham, AL. Topped a hill---blue light---pull over. LEO looks at my license and asks "where the hell are you going?" "I'm trying to get to the steel mill in Birmingham before they close at 10:00 or I'll have to layover until they open in the morning." LEO--"I haven't stopped anything tonight but truckers"---handed me my license and said "get the hell out of here".

including not remembering driving home.
That only took me one time in my 20's, Lucky for me I was not arrested or hurt someone. I asked my self "just what were you thinking???????"
Lucky for me, I lived in a remote area at the time.0 -
Back in the day 3 of us country boys were tearing up the back roads in an old chevy pick up.I was sitting at the passenger side door.My bud driving decided to run off the road and hit a stop sign. The wooden post broke, the sign laid over flat and came through the windshield.Stopped a few inches from the middle guys neck. 0 -
141 in a 55....
127 in a 55....
driving to Piedmont, AL with a girl that at the time, I thought was 'the' one. 15 1/2 hours from Bradford, PA. Crossed the Alabama Line at over 120 mph, her sleeping next to me, and about a foot of wispy fog laying on the road that I watched close up behind us. Used to have a pic snapped, complete with speedblur on the edges....
being dozered up a hill in Birmingham, only to have the chain snap as the truck sunk in to a 45 degree angle. 300 foot overlook was breathtaking....as seen lookin down by my feet as I was sitting looking down through the driver's side window.0 -
Crrrisp early morning in the High Country, cookin' along at about 110, big sweeper left, no guardrail, just mountains and sky. Corner radius was decreasing, so I decided to just touch the brakes - at that instant, the steering (it was a brand new FORD) seemed to "lock up" and the car headed for the edge of the road! Pucker factor went nearly INFINITE as I tried to slow the car without flying off over the edge of the road. When our heartrate slowed to a dull roar, I flipped open the hood to see where the burning smell was emanating from. The Power steering pressure hose had blown out of the pump, and all the oil had pumped out onto the right side brake disc! 0 -
Crashed my Camaro into a farmers' fence off base. Scratched the paint on the Camaro... did $2000 of damage to the barb wire fence. That was about 1994'. 0 -
Without a doubt my most memorable experience was when I took the 99 svt Cobra convertible my son bought while he was in Iraq to meet him at the Indy airport for his Thanksgiving leave in 04, it was the first time he laid eyes on it in person, it was also the happiest I had ever seen him, away from the war, no bullets, no IED's, just me him and the car, I thought I was going to have to tell them to get a room,lol,lol.. as he walked around that car touching every piece it was something truly special, a dream realized as he had searched high and low for this particular car and saved every penny he made while over there just to pay for it.... the first place we went was to best buy and bought the best high zoot detector they had.. we hit the interstate.. very light traffic thank God and off we went, found out that night that above 150 the top doesn't want to stay on so down it went, I manned the predator tuner and laptop, made it to 176, fastest I have ever been in a car, and it's something I'll never forget, my son, his car and me, a magic time that will never be repeated....... he passed away the following April... It's my best thanksgiving memory........Steve

I was doing a whopping 20 mph or so in my back yard, and drove my gokart right into the black berry bush.
never again. I sold it [:D][:D][:D]0 -
I have two good ones.
First, I was 17 years old coming back from Daytona Beach Spring Break with a buddy. It's some time late passing through Georgia with an Olds Cutlass that had no speedo, bad tie-rods that caused it to be a bit squirely, and we just got back on the highway after stoping in a strip club parkinglot to take a leak. A mountain of a Georgia trooper stops us, gets me out and gives me the once over thinking I was drunk.
Here's were it got scary, My buddy has a major sinus infection, and he was overly medicated on benadryl and decongestants. Tooper walks up to his window and motions for my buddy to roll down the window. My buddy abruptly reachs to the floor and holds up a shiny object, and the trooper draws his hand cannon. My dumb arse friend picked up the chrome window crack off the floor that had busted off earlier. Luckily the trooper recognized the item before he shot, and he yanked my buddy out of the car (by his ears according to my friend). We escaped with our lives after the troop made it clear we should leave his state and never return.
Second, I'm headed to Police Acedemy graduation in my wife's (Girlfriend at the time) street racer Mitsubishi Eclipse. I'm runing well over 150 because I got some nooky before the cermony and now I'm late. Come over the hill and see a trooper stopped and his neck about breaks as he watches me go by. I pull right over, and sit there cussing myself. The trooper walks up, says, "Boy" looks in and sees my uniform "You mother f&^&er, get the f&*& out of here". He turned and walked away.0 -
Back in the late 70's, I was a passenger going 140mph in a friend of mine's 1973 Camaro with the police chasing us! Never got caught, thank GOD!!!!!!!!!! 0 -
Way back in high school I was skipping class drinking beer in my car with some friends in the school parking lot. Somehow someone saw me/us and reported it.
Couple days later "they" came to one of my classes to talk/arrest me.
I wasn't there cause I was in the parking lot with friends drinking beer again.[:0]0 -
1. Driving from South Plains to Floydada, TX in a brand new (rented) 2001 Impala on a Friday night, running wide open. Topped a hill and found a big herd of cattle crossing the road. Just happened to be a gap between them in my lane. I swore there was going to be hair and hide on the side mirrors.
2. Two weeks later, on my way home to MO, I blew into Wichita doing 90 at about 2 AM. Trooper hit the lights on a section of the highway that had almost no shoulder, so I slowed down to about 50 and idled down the road another mile or so. He asked for my license, and wanted to know "exactly where the hell I was going in such a damned hurry." I said that I had been stuck in Plainview TX for 6 weeks, and all I wanted was to be home in MO for breakfast. He turned to go back to his car, then came back and asked me why I kept driving after he pulled up behind me. I explained that I didn't think either one of us needed to be sitting out in traffic in the middle of the night, so I drove until the shoulder was wider. He checked me out, brought my license back, and thanked me for being considerate of his safety. He also asked that I slow down until I was out of Wichita.
I got rid of that damned car as soon as the rental place opened the next morning.0 -

What was wrong with the car? [8D]0 -
1. Purchased an ATV and trailer off ebay from a fellow in New Hampshire. Left my house in my beatup pickup to go pick it up. Got there picked it up and was in a hurry to get home and use it. Was running on the interstate towing it around 80-85mph most of the way home. Got home fine and ran inside to go to the bathroom. Came back out, started the truck to back it up and touched the brake pedal, NO BRAKES, had a blown brake line. Who knows when or for how long I had been running with compromised brakes!
2. Was working in Oregon and took the cash option instead of a ticket home so I could save some money. I partied extremely hard after a 20hr workday. Got to the airport in poor shape. Flew from Portland Oregon to somehwere in Cal, then to Las Vegas, to Nashville to DC to Boston to Manchester NH. Got to NH after midnite. Tried to rent a car but I was too young, no cabbie would take me to Bangor ME. Finally talked a cute car rental girl into renting me a brand new Nissan Altima. Got on 95 heading home at around 1 tailing a trucker doing in the 80's, when a shape came out from under the truck. No time but to brace. Hit a dead deer! Launched the car but didn't crash. Got the car to Bangor where I went to every carwash to get rid of the rotten deer parts under the car. Had to go to a garage and talk my way into getting it on a lift so I could pull out over 40lbs of rotten deer. This thing was putrid, had been dead for some time. The entire exhaust was coated and it had cooked. I had to meet my mother at the Subaru dealer to take me home. When she walked out of the showroom to go use my car, she asked What stinks at least 100yds away from the car. Got the car dropped off and finally got home. AFter app 50+ hours of work/partying/crashing/driving I slept for about two days straight.0 -
My first full pass off the throttle stop in a super comp dragster was great. It had started to get cold and the track was really cooling off, I was the hired gun on a 220 inch Yancer mono-shock rear engine dragster, at that time it was running a 540 CI BBC with 900 HP. At launch she took off like a bat out of hell and pulled a 1.00 sec 60 ft time, the pass was straight as an arrow till I hit the 1000 ft marker, then she started to wiggle. That wiggle turned into a sway and the sway turned into a sashay. Buy the time I hit the finish line I was looking down the track through the right side upright in the cage, a pull of the chute brought her back in line again. The owner of the car told me he could read the compaition number on both sides of the car and he was standing right behind me on that pass. I ended up runnung 7.98 @ 176, so I had a car sideways at 176 MPH and I didn't hurt anything[:p]. I have many great racing stories, but that one always brings a smile to my face[:D] 0 -
A number of years ago I entered a big money bracket race at the local track. Out of all the cars there, there are 2 street driven vehicles, me and one other guy. We're all sitting in the staging lanes waiting and one of the local hotshoes come walking by. He looked at my wreck and then at me and says,' what's that thing doing here, this event is for real race cars. I told him i'd paid my entry fee just like him, he sneers at me and walks away. Well what he'd said to me didn't sit to well with me. So who do you think I draw the first round?, yep the same guy. I cut a .002 lite and ran .003 over my dial and put him on the trailer. Not bad for an old street driven truck with no electronics. Dave 0 -
Riding with a friend in his old small block powered beater CJ7 when he decided to cut across a cornfield and save a couple of minutes. Went spinning through there, cornstalks flying, roostertailing mud, doing doughnuts, etc. Got to where we could see the road through the corn just up a small bank. Popped up the rise about 50mph,got a little lift, and found the field was separated from the road by a 5 strand bob wire fence! About 6 feet away! The windshield was down and I had just sat down from standing up trying to see over the corn.
I can still remember that wire going TWANG!
Had to stop on the road and cut it free from the Jeep while keepin a close eye out for the farmer!

Just back from a 3yr tour in Germany and on leave, the wife kids and I were heading to her folks. I was tooling down the highway about 80mph in a 55, when a Iowa State Trooper popped over a hill. I knew I was had, so I just pulled over. Since my license was expired due to my service, I presented the trooper with my expired license, my German license, and my Military ID. He asked where we were heading, and I told him to a state troopers house. He asked who, and I told him my FIL's name. He then asked, "How's old John doing?", Thanked me for my service, told me to slow down and sent me on my way. First thing my FIL asked me when we arrived was "How fast was you going Ron?" Told him, and thought word sure gets around quick. 0 -
Driving a semi westbound out of St.Louis (O'Fallon area) on I-70.
Passing a slow RV when suddenly the truck in front (who I was following around the RV) of me makes a quick lane change to the right and calls out over the CB. "Look out SMX, There's one comin at ya!"
It was a 1970 Monte Carlo going the wrong way on the interstate.
The guy in the RV hit the brakes and gave me just barely enough room to clear him and cut right myself. But by no means time enough to move completely over.
As I cut right, the car cut left and passed me 1/2 on the road, 1/2 on the shoulder. Missing having highway speed head on by inches!
Had to stop at the rest area a few miles down the road and "compose myself".0
