Mercury ... THE DEATH ELEMENT!
A friend of mine from MD sent me this today ... .[8D]
Obviously when we were growing up we were really stupid. Or maybe we have just gone too far is this country, today.
When we were in school, I remember having mercury rolling around the lab table tops. Kids rubbed it onto the surface of coins. It was an element that one used in experiments. We all used Mercurochrome, etc.. for scratches, & cuts. And geez, we all lived. I do not recall anyone even having mercury poisoning.
But today in Baltimore, in a portable classroom, some kid dropped, or did something to, a thermometer containing mercury. And I believe it came out of the glass tube into the room. On to the floor, desk? Not sure. So you know what they did? They called in the hazmat crew with all kinds of firetrucks, etc. They ran 7 or 8 kids, & I think the teacher, thru the decon wash & hosed down, or whatever they do for mercury, the classroom. And then sent the *whole *school home for the rest of the day.
I ask - Might this qualify as an over reaction? Evidently not; since the parents are up in arms ready to sue the school, "they did not call us in time, etc., etc." I am sure there will 7 or 8 cases of mercury poisoning by the end of the weekend. Some from kids not even in
the classroom. Probably not even school today.

I remember we had a big old heavy container of mercury in my fifth grade class that we used in science. We spilled some horsing around and our teacher made us try to gather it up since it came out of his personal funds. That was a lot like stacking marbles. He did ask us to make sure we washed our hands afterwords for safety's sake. 0 -

Interesting! Last night I saw on TV some of the treasure they would bring up from a pirates ship, sunk many years ago. One of the items they were showing was a hypodermic device that was used to inject mercury into the male member when they had a sexual disease. 0 -

Scott....Yep..... It sounds like over kill to me.
I worked in a hosptial many years ago after high school. We had thermometers break all the time. The mercury would be rolling around on the floor so we would just get a piece of paper, scoop it up and put it in a glass or plastic vial.
I have had large balls of it rolling around in the palm of my hand. I think I still have some out in the garage.
Its not a big deal unless, of course, you put it on your Wheaties or pour it in an open wound.0 -
I work in a wrecking yard.About 10 years ago the EPA people came in an said we need to remove the mercury switches that are used to turn on the under hood and trunk lights and store them for future safe disposel.We just a letter this week again from the EPA saying they are going to pay us a dollar each for them.

I expect you could get poisoned with it if you tried, but like most of the tree hugger crap, it's greatly exaggerated. Like most people, I played with it when I was a kid. Thermometers used to have mercury in them. We would break the thermometers to get the mercury to play with. I wonder how smart we all would be now if we hadn't become retarded from playing with mercury. 0 -

Hmmmm. Ya know those compact flourescent light bulbs that everyone is going nuts about? Care to take a wild guess what makes them light up (besides electricity) Real hazard with mercury is inhaling the vapor/ oxide. Labs should have a mercury spill kit, but hosing down the students is overkill. 0 -

I have access to four pounds of mercury but there is no reason to deal mess with it. I tried to look of things that you can do with is but all I saw was making quarters shiny and rolling balls around in your hand. 0 -

Coal Burning/distributing/handling releases lots of Mercury, poundage wise...but you can bet the greenies will join with the antigunnies soon, and list our primers as toxics, require anyone handling/disposing of them to have a "toxic materials disposal license/training", and threaten to make every reloader's home a "Superfund site"...
I remember idly paddling around in a dish of Mercury in the 60s in a dentist's office. In most Merchant Ships' Engine rooms, there were 20-50 air operated manometers hooked up to the various tanks in the hull, each filled with several ounces of Mercury, used to read the tanks' level remotely, and several jars of Mercury in the ships' stores to refill the manometers as necessary.

It could be bad news for the school. All mercury should have been removed from schools years ago. Thing is, when parents sue the school, they're really sueing themselves.0 -
I used to play with mercury in school. I can remember, I got a broken thermometer, and I had a little pool of it in my hand. It was very heavy, I recall. I didn't know it was supposedly dangerous.
Fifteen years ago I began having all kinds of health problems. Took ten years to get diagnosed. I had lead and mercury poisoning. The lead problem was worse than the mercury problem.
I have been fighting this crap for five years now and still have lots of health problems.
Laugh at the Feds if you want to, boys, but take it from me, lead and mercury poisoning will ruin your day.0 -
