Walter Reed Hospital...
I am appalled at the story about the facility and treatment of soldiers at the Walter Reed Hospital, and facilities like them! The Govt. publicly louts the efforts of our armed services and states they are behind them a 110%, but in reality are passing off second hand care and equipment to our injured personnel! These types of facilities should be "show case facilities and services"! When a man (or woman) puts there life on the line in defense of this country, policies, & efforts, the promise of "good" care and or compensation for injuries received defending that effort is undisputable! Any govt. agency/dept./personnel doing less is guilty of neglect and should be punished accordingly!
I am also amazed at the effort (or lack of it) by the press to point this out to the public! I only wish one self-righteous politian would step up to the plate and be a "real" purveyor of the public good! ..I should not probably hold my breath till this happens! My $0.02!

Well they did have a plan....dump all these military folk on the VA.
Problem you have is that people that have been in the military awhile are entitled to US Code Title 10 Chapter 61 Medical Retirements if the military rates their disability 30% or greater........so what has the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines been doing?
Getting everyone rated less than 30% and a boot to their rear out the door.
Lost an arm johnny.....10%....hit the road. Private Doe.....you appear to be ok....20% rating....get the heck out....DOD is not using the VA Disability Rating system and is rushing everyone thru the system without even looking in their service medical records to see what the heck is even wrong with them.

Regarding the March 1 front-page story "Hospital Officials Knew of Neglect; Complaints About Walter Reed Were Voiced for Years":
So, Rep. C.W. Bill Young (R-Fla.) was so horrified by the conditions he and his wife saw in 2004 while they were visiting troops at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, and they were made to feel so uncomfortable when they alerted commanders to the neglect that they witnessed firsthand, that the Youngs stopped visiting "out of frustration."
Gee, if only Mr. Young had a job where he could have used some political clout to shed some real light on the matter or where he could have called for a hard-hitting federal investigation to put some real heat on those in charge for allowing the situation to fester. Too bad. Maybe someday Congressman Young will have a job like that.

I got out in 1993 with a disability. I promptly went to the VA and was told they weren't taking new patients because the waiting list was too long. The next closest VA hospital was 5 hours away. I have never tried again. VA hospitals have always suckled in my experience. 0 -
Lucky you didn't go. They mailed me prescription medicines for my service caused disability I was medically retired for...shortly after they mailed me bills for the medication.
Then the VA sent me to collections. Funny as heck....I wrote them a nice letter stating they could shove that bill up their keisters and can freely deduct the money from my military disabled retired check if they choose.
I got a phone call from the Regional VA quack apologizing. I laughed at him too. Go ahead and take me to collections...ferkin raterds.0 -

I intended to say something about the Sec of Army and such being scapegoats. I intended to say something about the guys actually NOT doing the maintenance and wondering what exactly are the janitors doing. I was also going to throw a few accusations towards the unions protecting the lazy workers, but I read JamesRK's postings.
Sadly, he right. 100%.0 -
Unions do not protect any Civil Service people anymore. NSPS has taken over which is a new personnel system...they can hire and fire quickly as they wish now. 0 -

Of course it will be different for Walter Reed, but the VA that I spent 9 months in most all of the janitorial work was done by patients.
Infact this facility was very low staffed (purposly that way) and most of the work there was done by patients under the supervition of staff. I personally worked as a nurses aid in the infermary (the infermary had the very sick patients that needed constant care) helping take vitals, changeing bedding, and other odds and ends. They did pay us for this work but it only ammounted to about enuff to keep cigs and such.
This system was very efficient and that facillity was very very clean. And with patients doing the majority of the work it left the other staff free to handle the extreamly important stuff very quickly and consentrate on giving excellent care on all major concerns.
It also gave those patients who were working a sence of porpose and that they could do for themselves and others.
I'm not saying this would work in all places. This particular VA is not the typeical type setting. Most all the patients are there for rehabilitation or physical or mental theropy. (I was there for physical theropy after major knee surgeries on both knees and Gulf War Illness observation)0 -
I work with a Vietnam Veteran that had half his head blown off. He now has steel and silicone holding his head together. He said back then they didn't want to give him a Medical Retirement...but he fought and eventually won.
Now he's in Civil Service and his brain is so bad they won't let him drive govt. vehicles anymore because he wanders off the flightline and goes off thru the grass....kinda hazardous when you have B-52's and other planes sitting here loaded with live munitions.
He's one of the winners...there is no way the Federal Govt. can fire him. He will serve his time in Civil Service until he dies or chooses to retire. I will defend him at all cost. It's the least I could do. I also will defend EVERY US disabled Veteran at all costs.
I have submitted Congressional Testimony on the problems with the Department of Defense Disability Evaluation system...and am risking my job, my name, and my families future doing so.
I don't have one of those yellow ribbons on the back of my truck saying I support the troops...I am willing to do much more. I am a Non-Commissioned Officer of the US Armed Forces...to do anything else is TREASON.
So if you really support American's going to battle outside of the United States...do more than put a nice little yellow bow on your SUV.
