Got my First Delta Hog !
Brought home my first hog from the Mobile-Tensaw Delta yesterday. Single shot of .44 mag at 25 yards put him right down. I tell you what -- using a canoe was really the ticket. The quietness and shallow draft really paid off, plus hunting in shorts and flip-flops is pretty nice too. However, another 30 lbs and my little pack canoe would have been out of freeboard [:D]

Winchester 240 gr JSP (the white box stuff). Seemed to work well -- the shot hit him up above the shoulder as he was quartering toward me, and ended up right under the anus.0 -
Winchester White Box?? really, boy that stuff worked better than I thought it would. I have always been a big fan of the Hornady XTP for anything with a thick hide. 0 -

Alabama. After melting all summer, this nice weather very welcomed. Come January, though, I'm not sure the canoe is going to be quite as fun.
28 deg? Y'all are off to a cold start! Those cold mornings are always real pleasant after about 4 hours in a tree stand. [:D]
As far as the meat goes, I've got it aging in a cooler right now. Will probably try to grind a bunch of it into sausage. Hopefully it will turn out okay.0 -

I think I have busted more pigs in creek beds or small streams than anyplace else here in central CA. That .44 mag is just more proof it's a hog stopper. I carry one as a side arm.0 -

Lower Delta near Saraland, Bayou Sara area. There are hogs in both the lower and upper sections, but from what I have heard the lower has many more. I have been out about 5 times and seen or heard hogs every time. The biggest challenge I'm findings is seeing them through all the palm fronds and brush. Also, a lot of the area I have been in has been so swampy you almost can't get out of the boat. Luckily, I happened to shoot the one pictured on a nice solid piece of ground.
What would be perfect I think would be a shallow draft runabout with a trolling motor and one of those tall casting platforms.0 -

Small pack. I had given up for the day and had my rifle unloaded and cased, and had my head down paddling hard to get back to the ramp about 3 miles away. Heard something and looked up to see the pictured hog right on the edge of the water. He snorted, kind of jumped, and took off. As I scrambled for my rifle I thought for sure he was gone, but a few seconds later he and about 4-5 others came right back out.0 -

Thats the way it works! Classic pattern!!!![^] Next time, from my experience if your in a good position to follow them at a distance down wind, they will lead you to a larger heard. One time I had a pack of three that I had followed up an adjacent canyon from a creek bed, then it turned into ten, then 25 then 30 plus that I could not see in the brush. Blind as bats but got the nose!.[:D]0 -
