    I will put 20 dollars in the Salvation Army kettle tomorrow, and see how they respond. If they say "Happy Holidays", I'll respond with "Merry Christmas."

    It's not about the bell ringer (which has got to be a terrible job, whether they're paid or a volunteer) it's about helping the Salvation Army. They do good work and deserve as much help as possible -- all year long.

    I put money in the kettle today. The ringer said "thank you" I said "thank you for doing this".
    I, a few years, rang the bell in front of Targets until they stopped it a few years ago. I had a friend that was Captain in the SA at the time. His family and friends made many sacrifices to help others. I attended the Church very simple and it provided food and comfort for many.
    If you do not want to give, don't. But please, do not give a trivial happening as an excuse.

    JWB,.......I spoke to them earlier today.
    Was told that they have no standard "script" so to speak, for the bellringers to follow.
    They are free to respond however they wish, but was assured that in NO way, do they have any policy against saying Merry Christmas, and never will.

    Don't you all find that there are some uncharitable opinions expressed in this thread ??

    They are all volunteers.

    The Salvation Army, as a group, hold the highest ideals and standards that any charity possibly could, in my experience.

    I agree Doug,.......I just wanted to find out if they had capitulated to the PC morons or not.
    I have given to the Salvation Army for many years, and not just through the bellringers pots.

    Is that the christian way? To not donate money to the needy because of some semantics. If you want it to represent your faith then do what your fath would have you do, turn the other cheek and help the needy..

    I am sorry if that came off as an accusation. I don't know where or how you donate. My point I simply, you originally felt the Salvation Army did enough good to give them a hard earned dollar. Then you figured happy holidays was so offensive that it change your opinion of the organization? It seems ridiculous to me.. <shrug>

    I am personally not a religious person; I will give money to a organization that does good things despite their religious focus. As long as I feel they do good in the community.

    Actually, Jesus ISN'T the reason for the season. People were giving gifts on December 25 long before Jesus was born. It was called "Saturnalia", it was the Roman holiday celebrating the god Saturn. And the pagans of Northern Europe would celebrate "Yule" and the winter solstice. Christianity just adopted these holidays (including their customs) and called it "Christmas." Jesus wasn't even BORN in December. So the "reason for the season" is actually a bunch of pagan holidays.

    And if you have a Christmas tree in your house, that is a pagan symbol adopted from the pre-Christian Yule celebration! Ditto with misseltoe, holly, the Yule log and many other "Christmas" traditions. They all came from pagan winter holidays. So when the SA bellringer says "Happy Holidays", he means Saturnalia, Yule and the Winter Solstice.
