Give me info AR in .223 -v- 7.62x39
I'm thinking about a build for a an AR I can take hunting. I like the idea of the 7.62x39 since WA state wont let us hunt with anything less than .243 for deer. On the other hand, most proven is the .223 in the AR config.. What are your thoughts or experiences with the 7.62x39 or should I go with the .308. I want the looks of the varmint types with free float handguard and SS barrel. Not much for all the tatical stuff, but would want the flattop for scope...Thanks

I would go with a .308, I like the cartridge and my Uncle shot one that should have went down. We spent all morning looking for it, I think something with a little more knock down power than the 7.62X39 has is a better choice for Deer sized game. Only my 2 pennies!

Your biggest problem with the 7.62x39 is finding GOOD mags that will work.
If you want the best of both worlds I would say build whatever style of .223 rifle you want then build a 7.62x39 upper for hunting. I know this cost more money but give you the best of both worlds. I have heard that you can get 8rds of 7.62x39 in a straight 20rd .223 mag and it will feed and function. You can build a flat top upper for around $500.

There are other caliber retrofit uppers for the AR.
I wouldn't want corrosive gas from Mil 7.62x39 spitting in my AR upper.
One caliber I have is the 6x45 which is the 223 modified with just the neck expanded to 6mm with one pass of a 6mm expanding plug. It's a very easy job and should make you legal.

I think a .308 is lots better for over a couple of hundred yards also; although I have a 7.62X39 upper and with good loads it works fine for deer.
Just for your info. CProducts has just released 10rd mags for 7.62X39 and just got 3 of them and they work great. The high cap. mags are comeing after the first of the year.0 -

Nwcid - up in Blaine (NW corner) I've seen your auction for a build and am considering it. I do understand what your saying about having 2 uppers and it is only money after all, but right now I could wish in one hand and put my money in the other - I might be able to buy me a mocha 16oz single shot[:D][:D]
I have money down on a Hesse with 18" heavy barrel and the 4 rail hand guard and Ace stock. I'll be parting with the handguard and getting the freefloat tube style but still want a fluted barrel. Then I might think about the 7.62 upper in about the same configuration.
Don't know if you take uppers in trade Nwcid but I would like someone who can do the headspacing and work I want0 -

Well I have some bad news for you. Hesse changed there name to Vulcan and have since had to change it again due to their bad rep. Just something for you to think about.
Good news is headspacing new bolts and Bbls is not really an issue unless something is wrong it is set. It only takes a couple special tools to completely take down an AR.

If you go for a 308 in a AR platform I recommend an Armalite AR-10. The AR-10(T) should fit the bill as far as the "Varmint" profile you are wanting. I perfer the Armalite over the Bushmaster BAR-10 and DPMS LR-308 due to it being the most durable(in my opinion). The BAR-10 has feed issues sometimes due to lugs being removed from the bolt to clear the FAL magazines used in them. And over the DPMS LR-308 because they are terribly balanced in the heavy barrel profile and I and many others have experinced issues with the takedown pins shearing.
Yes, with the Armalite you are looking at a good chunk of change(around $1200 to $1500) but that is only about $200 to $500 more than a smaller caliber in the style you want but is worth it in the long run. Magazines are easily converted from surplus M14/M1A mags and avaliable from single shot to 30rounders.
I am a proud owner of a AR-10A4 and Ar-10(T) and love them. They are very accurate and a dream to shoot.

+10000 on the avoiding Hesse, Vulcan, Blackthorne whatever their name is nowadays. Not to rain on your parade or anything, but you would probably be money ahead to forget about Hesse and get a quality kit. DelTon would be a great place to look, thats where I got mine and they come highly recommended. As far as calibers, look into the 6.8SPC. It's really becoming popular in ARs. There are even factory loads made for it now. Lots of people have used it to take deer and hogs, and even a few elk.
