Watch out for the latest XP hotfix
Sigh.
I really hate Micro$oft sometimes, and today is one of those days.
I've just spent the last hour troubleshooting my printers, all three of them. I was printing fine this morning, I let automatic updates update the computer (there's six of them today) and afterwards, I go to print a document and guess what? "Window's can't find that printer."
I go to my Printers and Faxes, and sure enough, my printers are all listed as "unable to communicate."
I delete my printers, one by one, and then reinstall them. No luck.
I then go on my desktop, which in reality is only a server anymore (I use laptops and work wirelessly), and notice that it did the automatic update, too. And, in the process of doing it, Micro$oft programmed File Sharing and Print Sharing to be shut down.
So, word to the wise. Before you tear your hair out like I did trying to figure out what is wrong, make sure to check your File and Print Sharing after the newest Windows Hotfix.

I just got off the phone after 1 1/2 hours with a tech in India getting my anti-virus upgrade to down load. At least he spoke fairly clear English. 0 -
There must be something different with your setup. I employ a wireless network and share files/printer between my Desktop computer (wired connection) and my laptop (wireless connection). I have Windows XP Home Edition on the Desktop computer and Windows XP Media Center Edition on the Laptop computer and automatic updates were installed on both computers this morning. Everything works fine, including file sharing and the shared printer. 0 -

A lot of times updates make your system go back to basic properties. If after updates are installed I have a problem, I automatically go back to check for basic settings and to see if the latest drivers are being used.
We all havr to play the price for a few goofballs to have their jollies trying to hack computers.0 -

No problems here, but then, the only thing Microsoft in the set up is my mouse... MS makes a *fine* slimline mouse. Very nice for gaming... 0 -
this has been happening on occasion since windows 95, you used to loose different drivers such as modem, sound
you need to reinstall starting with the host computer, then work your way back0 -
Speaking of crappy Dell, I went to download a driver for a friend of mines printer, and the D drive will not burn the cd. It don't even recognize that there is a cd in the drive. Dell representative was supposed to call me back today at six to help me fix it, and I still haven't heard from them.
Wonder if they won't mind if they don't hear from me when it comes time for me to send in my payment? [}:)] Doubt that!!0 -
I work on computers at my house on the side. I use a usb wireless adapter on the main machine and use the same on any machine I bring into the house. I have several laptops that I use at the house with no problems at all. Not sure what the deal is with yours but, one thing I have learned is never underestimate the power of a trojan or spyware. 0 -
I quit using Microshaft when they disabled my 13 month old Compaq conveniently right after the warranty expired.
I will never use their products again. Google Microsoft WGA.
Since some hacker somewhere's on Earth created a Windows XP Key that matched mine, Microshaft disabled my legal copy and the hackers computer as well.
I lost all the kids pictures....everything. The operating system would no longer boot.
Read your user agreement with Microshaft. If they destroy your computer they are only liable for $5. You agreed to it.0
