Gamo air rifles stooped to a new low..
While flipping through the channels this morning. I came upon an informerical for Gamo air rifles on the Outdoor channel.
The setting was in something like a college lecture hall with mostly girls sitting around.
1200 fps these rifles will shoot.
Three or four shots at a 200 lbs wild boar bayed with three dogs. After two or three .177 pellets bounced off of its skull the guy finally went for a vitals shot. "there you have it folks. a 200 lb boar taken with an air rifle, WHO would have believed it!!!"
Then the guy shot a Coyote while it was trapped in a snare.
Next he went after another Coyote he spotted while the crew was driving down the freeway. It was quite clear that something was wrong with it. After he shot it. It had a missing foot from being in a trap one point..
"Get your kids involved. Makes a great family sport.."
NO THANK YOU.
That kind of "Great hunting" (as they put it) is something I DO NOT WANT MY KIDS to be associated with..
I want my kids to stick with small game and rodents when it comes to hunting with an air rifle. Not going out and filling large animals full of lead with a .177 pellet gun.

There are some sick folks in this world.
Air rifles are for kids, or a VERY limited purpose.
I'd like to put a few pellets into that guys azz, although I didn't see it.
That is the kind of garbage that is slowly ruining hunting, in the eyes of the populace.

I have a Gamo Hunter Extreme. Claims 1600 fps with their PBA pellets 1250 with lead.
The two oldest girls mess around with it even tho they have a hard time cocking it.
I have been doing one thing with the kids and pellet guns for years that they showed in the informercial. Cutting out photos of big game and placing it in brush, tall grass etc and letting the kids have at it. It teaches them a lot about different shooting situations.
But no.. I will not get them involved with going after a deer or turkey with a pellet gun of no kind as these people attempted to give the impression as being ok to do.0 -

Why does everyone here it seems, go around looking for a freakin arguement? I made a comment,...........I don't know you from Adam, nor could I care less what the heck you do!
I'm not a kid,.....I don't mess with air rifles regardless of their velocity, nor would I ever hunt with one. No need!

I love playing with the modern air rifles. For they are not your old Daisy Red Riders of your child hood.
Some of the .22 calibers today can match or even do better than some rim fire .22 rifles as far as accuracy out to and beyond 50 yards.

Buy 500 rounds of ammo for less than $10.00. What better way to practice sighting, breathing and trigger control at such a cheap price. And like I stated. Set some cut out photos of large game at different angles, set them among brush small dirt piles, tall grass etc. And let the kids have at it. Better to teach a kid about good gun control, shot placement this way than to hand them a .243 and say let's go deer hunting with no more experience than shooting a few round targets at a range somewhere.0 -
Mark, There are some great hunting airrifles on the market, the little gamo's are not some of them. The new hunting modles come in all sorts of power levels and you can get them as large as .50 cal, like this one:

Great for adults too, if you are into that.
I belong to a private range, and can shoot until I am sick of it every week if I desire.
I just prefer the real thing, no offense was meant, other than what I said about shows like that being a negative to the "sport" of hunting.

problem today is kids, and parents fail to realize how deadly these modern air rifles are, kids are killed every year by these high powered air rifles through the lack of proper safety training, people think these are like the old red ryders we used to shoot each other with, but they are far from it 0 -

600 yards?! Why? So whatever you shot it at gets hit by a piece of lead traveling, what, 8fps? The BC of a pellet is around .02 or so?Why not just throw a rock?
Think I'll stick to my crummy Crosman and cats in the backyard.
BTW-"hunting" as shown on that infomercial is a lot like "hunting" Texas-style; pay a bunch of money to some yahoo with an Exotic Game Ranch, he leads you to the cages, you shoot the animal. Wow.0 -

The original post was not about liking or disliking air rifles.
I know that they can be great teaching aides for kids who's parents do not have the time or money to load three kids in a car drive two hours to a range shoot off three or four hundred dollars worth of ammo. And still end up with a kid that can does not know how nor where to place a shot into an animal for a quick clean kill. But that is beside the point.

What kind of a stink would you raise if say Raven for example had a big infomercial showing a .25 auto being used to kill a snared deer or elk?
What about a scene with a guy chasing a black bear through the woods pumping 7 or 8 shots into it before killing it? Then look at the camera and say, ""there you have it folks. a 400 lb black bear taken with a Raven .25 auto, WHO would have believed it!!!" All the while trying to convince you that you do not need a .308 or a 300 Win Mag to hunt large game with when a Raven .25 will do the job just fine and do it cheaper.0 -

Damn, And to think I was gonna do a Air rifle giveaway at 1000 posts......thank goodness I saw this thread.... waaaay too much HATE out there for a giveaway......I was looking at two that shoot around 1250fps......they were rifles with scopes. oh well I guess I'll do the next best thing and give away a Glock 22 holster when the time comes 0 -
I love my Gamo Hunter. Shoots @ 1200fps, .177cal.
I use it to plink in my backyard and let my kids shoot it.
My 11 yr old has become an excellent shooter thanks to the Gamo.
My 8 yr old is getting there.
Get this: Mine comes with a recoil pad. Its recoil is greater than a Ruger 10/22. It does kick. It is not a toy.0 -

Some army during the Napoleonic campaign outfitted their troops with air rifles. Austrian? French? British? Russian? Dunno.
What caught my eye when I read the article years ago (American Rifleman) was that troops caught with the "silent guns" would be executed, not taken prisoner. Best, Joe0 -

Not all pellet guns are relegated to .177 pellets and under 1200fps.
Some places make up to .50 caliber pellet guns with much more power than your run of the mill .177 I myself had a .22 caliber at 1400fps for a while was a fun little gun but didn't use it enough to justify having it.

Can't agree enough with that statement, I always hear of people running around shooting each other with metal pellet guns and cant figure out how there are so many stupid people still left in the world.
That poop will kill you if you are unlucky.
Red rider bb guns shot a maximum of 300fps and I believe most were under 150fps that wont even dent the side of a popcan most likely.0 -

Or you can do one better.
You simply handcuff a gang-banger, step back 15 yards or so away and open fire with one of these air rifles. Then, when he's good and dead, you say, "Hey! There you have it, folks! A 200# gang-banger taken out with a Gamo air rifle! WHO would have believed it!" All the while trying to convince you that every handgun in your collection is unneccessary and serves no defensive purpose, and you could do the job cheaper.0 -
I also belong to a private shooting range and can shoot whenever and how much I want.Didnt mean to ruffle your feathers, the point I was making is: pellet guns nowdays are not considered toys, yes, a great training tool for kids learning to shoot and proper gun handling.
I live in the city limits, hence I need to rid my yard of pesky rodents that get into my barn and tear things up,thats where a good pellet gun comes in handy.
I know you dont know me, and dont care about my life and the feeling is mutual, I was not looking to argue just stating a few facts.

Well Slingblade,.......if you look at my first post, you will see I was answering the original "intent" of the post.
You seemed to be irritated about my comment of what (I) believed that air rifles are largely for. My idea is training kids, and also for what you use one for, not to see how big of an animal you can kill with one.
BTW, I like Spanielsells idea of the 200 pound gangbanger the best.
I was trying to say that "infomercials" and companies promoting garbage like that, are another nail in the coffin, for the sport of hunting, which I believe was the original premise.0 -

Those are not what you would call "toys"
People in Denmark shoot with .177, .22, .30, 9mm, .45 and .50 in certain clubs.
Some really do reach incredible results and velocities.
But shooting a boar several times.. that's not "hunting"... that's violence until death occurs.
In my opinion - hunting is being able to deliver one shot, one clean kill - not.. shooting until it's dead.0 -
Don't forget that it is easy to set up a safe indoor range - attic space, garage, long hallway, etc. Or outside in the back yard, since air guns are usually very less regulated than powder arms. 0
