...Politician's locking up dopers for votes, sounds GOOD to me. I would support most any law that wanted to apply the death penality to some of these scumbag dopers and dealers.

...San-Fran-Whacko and CA. in general are prime example's of what a few decades of drug use will do/cause; that's why it's called DOPE...[xx(]

you dont really have to be a fan of drugs, imagine how much less money can be spent, prosecuters would have time to prosecute the people that actually need to be prosecuted, prisons would be freed up for the people that actually need to be imprisoned. But i think that the police would be pissed because there crime statistics would drop, police angry about crime statistics dropping?

Seems like most of the LEO's I talk to on the subject are in favor of some drug decriminilzation, at least as far as Marijuana goes. Their reasoning goes that dealing with Marijuana poessesion eats up huge amounts of their time and resources and gives the gangs and other organized criminals a substantial cash crop that they wouldn't have if was marijuana was legal. They would rather devote the time and resources to the Meth problem which is far more dangerous at every level, especially since Meth makes people crazy while Marijuana just seems to make them lazy.

BigGun74 got it perfect. marijuana is too profitable for us to fight its market. hardcore drug dealers usually start out growin pot, then when they get enough cash they move on to more expensive drugs. why dont we just decriminalize marijuana possesion so the real bad guys cant use it to get the REAL drugs.

Decriminalize the whole spectrum of now-illegal drugs. Tax them and sell them to anyone over 18.

Let them kill themselves - in fact, encourage them to...subsidize drugs to the disadvantaged.

"let then kill themselves" ????? "subsidize drugs to the disadvantaged" ???? sure, lets use a medical problem drug addicts have to KILL them... not treat them, just KILL them.

your saying we should encourage people to develop a life threatening medical condition and hope they die... because they are poor? or dumb enough to get hooked? just kill them all right?

    wow

It is not illness; it's behavior.

i dont know if i agree. i guess it all starts as behavior. but look at the powerful hold is has on them, they dont think of anything but getting high? i think heavy drug use is capable of rendering a perfectly health person unable to resist the drugs addiction, making it an illness.

I am definitely anti-drug. But having lived some of my life on the wrong side of the fence, I can say that some drugs are way more lethal and addictive. Therefore, they should have lesser penalties. Just like a speeding ticket and a DUI don't carry the same penalty. But all mind-altering substances, including alcohol, cloud our judgement and impair our ability to function at our best.

Some on here really need to get out more.

If you think that decriminalizing some drugs will free up resources you are sadly mistaken. What you are forgetting is that other resources will have to be utilized to handle all the drug users and their dependents. It is a slippery slope and where it has been tried the resources expended to handle the drug user far outweighed what it cost in resources to jail them.

You don't want to go down that road.

The end of Prohibition freed up a lot of resources to combat other crime.

    Really.

And what is the current cost to US (the taxpayers) to support all the people addicted to alcohol? What is the cost in lives and money for just drunk drivers?

What is the cost to support the families of those that are addicted to alcohol in welfare and other programs?

That road is one you don't want to go down.

Exactly. If the society did choose the road of entitlement and socialism then it will have to handle the costs associated with
    maintaining those who don't contribute.

If you take away any kind of support and educate people in a way that they and nobody else is responsible for their own well being, the situation would be very different.

You think way to highly of the general population.

Just look a the average citizen living in the large cities. Without the underlying supports they use every day how long would they last?

That maybe, Alpine, however, like I said earlier, it is a pretty long road I am talking about that this country needs to take to get rid of the idea that there'll be someone who'll fix everything and take care of everything, in other words, promoting self-reliance. I really it wouldn't take long and those who can't accept responsibilities for their lives and actions and well being, well, they'll be gone.

I Think if one looks at the costs of alcohol addiction today, you will find they are much lower than even just 20 years ago. The revenues generated by taxing alcohol have paid for education, rehabilitation, and enforcement of alcohol related laws.

Illegal drug problems are dealt with using general fund taxes - that means EVERYBODY pays, not just the user. In addition, thousands die and are killed in drug related incidents, annually, which education and rehabilitation would significantly reduce. Also, the murders caused in the illegal drug distribution business would disappear overnight. As would the organized crime infrastructure dedicated to it. That would free up thousands of policemen to pursue enforcement of serious crime. Burglary and theft would decline, along with the associated murder rates.

There is no downside, and anyone capable of logical thought, when they consider these aspects of legalizing these substances, will reach that conclusion.

We have been fighting the war on drugs for forty years, and the problem is worse today than ever before.

    A new approach is demanded.

A person has to be predisposed to an addiction before it becomes an addiction, to some substances.
While some drugs create an almost immediate physical dependency (highs are too high, so the lows seem too low), others, alcohol, for example, can be used by the masses in moderation and only a portion of the population actually become "addicted" to it, mostly after years of daily use, during which a psychological addiction turns into a physical one.
Now, I'm not saying that any drug, alcohol included, doesn't have the potential of becoming a dangerous substance, but let's keep things in perspective.
I've known many marijuana users who have, over the course of 25 some-odd years, managed to have successful careers, obtain and maintain financial solvency, raise decent children to adulthood, be good citizens, otherwise than use an illegal substance.
People are going to want "their fix."
We have to learn to pick and choose our battles.

you would flip if you knew how many people use pot. legalize it and ban alcohol.

Why do drug users need a crutch like pot to get by?

Why can't they Man up and face life without numbing it down with pot?

    Wimpy minded people need pot.

Why do some people need alchohol?

Same-same.... I would venture to guess more live have been destroyed by alcohol than marijuana.

Imagine if all of the resources dedicated to our endless war on drugs could be used to secure our borders? Sadly there is so much Federal Money tossed into the drug war, to say nothing of cities and states abilites to sieze personal property and retain it, that the war will continue on and on.
