HR 2640 AND VETERANS
the new ncis bill will become law in a week or so. some are very happy this passed.but i have a couple of questions:
1st: was the VT shooter a veteran? how about the
colombine shooters, or the idot who shot those people at the omaha mall? the answer is NO! none were Veterans. the only shooter of a mass i can remember was Charles Whitman killing several students from the Tower an the University of Texas around 1965. the school shootings in Arkansas in the early 90's didn't include any veterans.
Why then is the new law targeting Veterans? Because we are easy targets. there are records kept on us from the 1st day we arived at Boot Camp until we left the Military. If you were disabled in any way the VA has records on us for any reason we were treated, especally if you served in a war zone. any thing from an ingrown fingernail to wounds you recieved,especally any of us who were diagnosed with a rating for PTSD. we are an easy mark. Who better to take gun rights away from. a group of "Baby Raping Mother Killing Murders". it doesn't matter that 99.9% have done nothing against any law. it's easier to target us than to do their jobs. i know i'm not the smartest, nor the most talented spokesperson on this forum. this is just my thoughts.

You must have missed this part of the bill:"The bill also will allow for individuals who are now unfairly prohibited from owning guns to appeal their prohibition and have their Second Amendment rights restored. This is currently not possible, and tens of thousands of Americans of sound mind, including many veterans, are permanently barred without due process from possessing firearms."0 -

The NRA claims:
"Last, but not least, H.R. 2640 also provides veterans and others their first opportunity in 15 years to seek "relief from disabilities" through either state or federal programs. Currently, no matter how successfully a person responds to treatment, there is no way for a person "adjudicated" incompetent or involuntarily committed to an institution to seek restoration of the right to possess a firearm."
The Truth:
The McClure-Volkmer Act of 1986 has provided veterans a way to have their rights restored for almost twenty years. The procedure for doing so is contained in 18 USC 925(c). The problem is that Congress has refused to fund the department responsible for processing restoration of rights applications since 1992, which - not coincidentally - is the 15 year time period that the NRA refers to in their claim above. So, the problem is Congress' failure to fund the restoration of rights, not the non existence of a procedure to have rights restored.
So the fault was in that the congress never allowcated the funding to allow it not that it could not be done!
And I bet that the same will hold true this time as well! So there for all is in vain!0 -
rsr...once you leave the military, your records are sent to St Louis to be placed in the repository. These can be subpeoned by the govt if they want to.
It doesnt just target vets, but we are the easiest because our records are so well maintained.
Pistoljim...there is already a mechanism to restore rights. Certain members of Congress just made sure it was never funded to allow those rights to be restored. Do I think they will fund it all of a sudden now? HELL NO. This was just another way to appease the NRA to get them to support it...and to get many people to accept it.
Lets look back over the years...before there was NICS...before 1968...people could buy guns without any paperwork or checks. I cannot remember reading about these shootings taking place back then.
Besides, the laws will ONLY be followed by those who NEVER had any intentions of going on any type of spree. Those that want to do it will ALWAYS find a way.0 -
i believe there is an alterior motive, that being they are trying to get out of paying claims for ptsd, disability, and prescription medicine. if they can use guns as a tool, many vets would not file claims at all given the recourse.[V][;)] 0 -

Could not agree more, but it is not PC, so therefore invalidated.
We need to eliminate guns overall, so that the poor pitiful drug addicts, and gang members, won't be tempted so easily.

If I read things right, the supposed funding for restoring your rights they claim the bill includes would only be available after you fight the battle in court and win. Given your chances of winning are non-existant there will never be any paid out. 0 -

WAGONWHEEL, You sure didn't waste your time as i see it. Thank You for your efforts. it's just too bad so many people can't see this is another gun control law. This law 2604 will probally affect me negitavely along with thousands of others. the next one will affect many people that think they should only have the right of the 2nd ammendment.
As said by others this law will keep lots of people from seeking help, for problems they have or will have in the future. I am not only speaking of Veterans, but others who will have some tragety in their lives.0 -
We need to remember to look beyond just the vets too.
Lets look at the kids today. While we do not have kids of our own, we are god-parents to three and have numerous neices and nephews.
Schools today have taken away constructive play time, recesses, and other activities that let kids burn off pent up energy. We all remember how much energy we had in grade school...right??? Well now these kids spend all day in class except for lunch time, with no outlet for this energy.
Guess what? Little Johnny or Janey gets fidgety in class because of it. Now the schools have psychologist or social workers that tell us that Johnny or Janey is ADD or ADHD and needs Ritalin or something along those lines.
Know what they REALLY need? To get their butts out of those chairs and go spend about 20 minutes in the morning, at lunch and in the afternoon out on the playground cutting up and BEING KIDS for Gods sake. That is how it was for us and I cannot remember a single kid being called ADD or ADHD in my time. If you were really disruptive, you got the paddle from the teacher in the hall and usually at home when you got there as well.
All these drugs and diagnosing of kids is doing is dumbing them down to where they are mindless sheep that will do whatever big brother tells them to do. It will also prevent them from owning firearms in the future.
They cant take them from us in one fell swoop, so they will take them a step at a time...once those of us who are now in our late 30s and up are gone, this new generation will not fight for anything. They have been programmed by the govt not to.
Just my .02...I may be paranoid...I may not.

Isn't the whole thing insidious on just about every level?
Every point I've heard made concerning 2640 here on GB is valid and the authors and supporters of the bill knew all of it. They baited the NRA and they know the funding is a whole separate matter. They know the process better than any of us and once they get your number and you're in the system they are not about to let you win. They've put all their liberal anti-gun heads together and worked on this piece of legislation for months years while you and me were out there trying to earn a living and raise a family.
Politicians and legislators do this as a full-time occupation and they are good at it.0 -

I started working on this legislation a long time ago in 2002, along with my colleague Representative CAROLYN MCCARTHY. That was when on Long Island, in my State of New York, a gunman who was a paranoid schizophrenic slipped through the cracks of the system and bought a .22 caliber semiautomatic rifle. He then took that gun, walked into a morning service at Our Lady of Peace Church and gunned down its beloved priest and one of its most prized parishioners.
So Representatives CAROLYN MCCARTHY, JOHN DINGELL, and I worked on legislation to help improve the background check system. We wanted then, as we do now, to make sure no more dangerous people are allowed to get guns.
