Boat question-Update
I bought a 1991 Alumacraft 17' bass boat today. It has a 75 Merc/Mariner. This is my first real boat so I don't know much about it. When I turn the key to the on position I get a high pitch beeping. It must a warning of some kind. The motor has an oil injector and it's full. The batteries are charged. The trolling motor doesn't work (It's a newer Min Kota). Does anyone out there in cyberspace know what could be causing that alarm to go off?
Update
After looking everything over I decided to disconnect one of the wires coming off the oil tank float. The beep-beep-beep went away. Now when I turn the starter switch to "on" I get a single beep. I assume the single beep is to let me know the beeper is working. With the muffs on and engine running I'm getting plenty of water out the prop hub and drain tube. Plenty of blue-white smoke. On the safe side I'm going to hook up my 3gallon gas tank from my jon with premix to the engine for this weekend. Take it in next week to a shop and have it looked over.

It's prob. your "lo oil press" alarm. KRANK IT UP. As soon as it starts, it'll stop. If it's fuel AND oil injected.I HAVE NO IDEA.
If it keeps beeping, read the MANUAL! The major problem is, the engine is BLACK, and will NEVER WORK.(shouldda bought a "JON-RUDE"),although their not what they used to be when OMC still built'em.[V]
It could also be "lo water press.", put the flush-muffs on it, and crank it up.

If it is momentary, it is a self test for the oil level sensor.
If it continues as a constant spaced beep, it might be a stuck oil float.0 -
Just because your oil tank is full does not mean the engine is getting oil. It is probably just something simple like the guys above are saying...but you want to make sure that the engine is getting the oil it needs. If you do run it....buy a set of water muffs that you can hook up to your garden hose....that way you know it will stay cool...this will also allow you to make sure the engine is "peeing" is what we always called it....if the motor is not peeing that could be your problem....it doesn't take much to clog those little holes....bugs...spiderwebs....weeds....you name it....
Check the fuses from the battery to the TM....they might have blown....is it a 12 or 24 Volt system.

Thanks. It's a 12 volt. I've already attached the water muffs and ran the engine. It's peeing and lot's of good ole blue smoke. I'll run out to work and get my Fluke and start chasing wires. I'll also need to get a manual. 0 -
LJ,.........is it a constant beep, or an intermittant beep?
If it is a spaced beep that continues, it probably is the oil float, or sensor,......I believe you have to replace the tank, to fix it.
If it is constant, it is a sign of overheating, or in your case, without the engine even being hot, a failed temp sensor.
Last possibility I can think of would be the main module, if your engine has one.
Most likely one of the above.

LJWrench- It sounds like the same problem I had 2 years ago. I have a 2001 90hp Merc and the alarm started going off. On my engine, (the 75 is basically the same as the 90- 3cyl) in the oil tank under the cowel is a small foam float with a metal washer glued to it. It floats in the oil and as long as the tank is full, it does not hit the magenetic sensor at the bottom. This is a safety feature to let you know you are low on oil. On my motor, the little metal washer came unglued and was setting off the alarm even though the tank was full. I emptied the tank and removed the little float and reglued the metal washer with "Gorilla" glue and have not had a problem since. This may be your problem, maybe not, but worth a look. Just empty the oil and see if the washer has come unglued from the float. Good luck. Let me know if this is the problem. 0 -
So did the engine beep stop after you got it running or did it continue.
A good tune up and service on the engine would do a world of good.....also be sure to check and make sure the Lower unit oil is still in good shape......cheap fix now.....big bucks if something goes wrong with the Lower Unit when you are out on the water....

Sounds like a low oil pressure alarm to me as well. It'll sound as long as the motor is not running.0 -
yep - low oil pressure - my searay with 190hp V6 mercruiser would have a high pitched "beep beep beep" that wouldn't stop until oil pressure was normal. 0 -
I know most of you have done it, so clue in the new owner.
If you THINK you have oil injection problems, mix oil with your gas until you figure it out. The worst that will happen is spark plugs fouling quicker if the engine is getting double oil (say in 15 hours or more).
If you are using 'mix gas', you don't have to worry about engine cratering due to no lube. If you are running on muffs and/or it "is peeing", you don't have to worry about overheating.
SO take the rest of the good advice above and ENJOY !
In case you didn't know, most of the last of the "mix gas" outboards used a 50:1 oil:gas ratio. It works out to a pint in six gallons.0 -
Another handy piece of advice....don't forget the plug.....The good news is anybody that has or does own a boat has forgotten to put the pug in at least once in there life. So just remember don't panic when it happens to you....[:)] 0 -
That beeping is normal and it is supposed to do that on that motor. It should stop once the engine is started. 0 -
LJ- Funny thing, as I was troubleshooting mine, I did the same thing. I disconnected the oil sensor and the alarm went off. That narrows it down to 2 things. Either the sensor is bad, or the washer fell off like it did on mine. You do not have to replace the oil tank to fix it. There is a small brass star clip that holds the float on. It keeps it from floating off the slide. This is easily removed with a coathanger. Reglue the washer and put the float back on. I used a long set of needlenose pliers because you will be working through the hole in the top of the tank. Press the star clip back on after putting the float on and refill the oil. I would definitely try this. It could save you some $$$$.

I disconnected the oil pumpn mine, mix oil myself.
on the older motor I wont trust the oil pump.
I had the cut the line and cap it.0 -
Kimbercolt's reply reminded me of this.
I bought a 90hp Evinrude in 1990(+/-), and they had just started using oil injection. Of course there were problems....
What tipped my scale was that Evinrude MADE A (NEW) PART to cover the hole in the engine where the oil injection gear was.
I jumped on it...if they have added a new part so that I can pull all the injection gear off and go back to mixing fuel, I'm going to do just that.

when we first moved to florida, we bout a 1900 SR Maxum (19 foot), it was great for a while, we kept it at the largo marina, it was the best, call em up, they get the boat off the rack, and drop it in the water, theyll gas it up for you, put ice in the built in cooler, but there was soo much maintenance having a boat in s a l t w a t e r, we decided the best boat, was some one elses!
