Where do most people have their CCW?
Sorry if this is a personal question, I understand if you might not want to answer. I've just been thinking about doing this and wondered where good spots were. ie somewhere that it's comfortable, stays concealed, and still have easy access. It seems like the small of your back wouldn't be too bad of a place as long as it doesn't show when you sit down...thats really the only one I can think of. I suppose it probably depends on what you're wearing too. So, any input would be greatly appreciated. Also, how would an XD40 do for a CCW? Too big or bulky? I have had my eye on one for a while now so I am just wondering about some of these little details. And how about the holster deal thats part of the XD Gear package? I think thats about all the questions that I can come up with for now :P...thanks for putting up with me!!

There are a lot of good articles floating around as to concealed carry. Read around and then try out some of the different ways to carry.
The XD-40 should do fine during the winter months when you can wear bulky clothing, but I would go with something smaller for the summer months.
Oh, BTW the fanny pack carry screams two things to me. Flamer or Carrying! So try to stay away from that one. JMO0 -

Yeappers on the smaller weapon for summer carry. That .40 will be sticking out like a sore thumb, JMHO. I will be looking for a new smaller carry gun myself. I carry a Kahr CW9 with a light jacket. That's my spring and fall carry piece. It also my winter carry altough sometimes I step that up to a 1911. Either way I carry them inside the waistband on my hip. 0 -

Crossdraw on weak side either shoulder or IWB. Small of the back carry really makes my back hurt, especially in a car. I doubt if there is anyone who always carries SOB.
I also like butt packs. Don't care if it IDs me. If it were legal here in Orygun, I'd carry unconcealed and strapped to my strong side thigh.0 -
Just another thought.
When you decide how you want to carry, practice drawing the weapon, OFTEN. You will probably feel like a dork the first few times you do this, but the goal is to build muscle memory so that when/if the time comes that you need to deploy the weapon you aren't fumbling around like a virgin on prom night.0 -
I live in the state which won't permit you CCW. I would carry just to feel more safe, as sometimes, the local "guests from the South of the border" get a bit too rowdy and too adventurous for my liking. 0 -

I think that kit holster with the XD40 might just work well for you as a start. Most of us have a larger pistol for carry in the woods, car, under a heavy coat, etc. The XD40 would work just fine. Plus its reasonably priced.
The other thing you will find out is that many times you will not be able to carry a large pistol in warm weather concealed. That is why most gun owners end up adding a pistol or two for special purposes. For me a kel-tec 380 or seecamp 32 will be in a leather Galco pocket holster in my front pocket. Even my Sig232 in 380 many times is my little friend on the way to the 7-11 for ice cream at night.[}:)]
Good luck with your purchase choice. This may become an addiction after you add another 10-20 pistols, a couple of drawers full of various holster types and boxes of different types of ammo that you just have to try.[:0][:0]

Yeah... but sometimes it's hard to remember which particular where you've left something. I've never figured a way to neatly and logically store all the leather and other accessories.

Ha!Ha! What is really funny I have so many holsters I can't remember what the heck half of them are for. So I am in and out of the gun safe pulling out pistols that I think will fit until I get the right one! Time to get a marker and label the backside of the holster.[:0]
Many are very easy to figure out but many are not that easy when you have collected them for 30+ years and are old and senile.[;)]0 -
Thanks for all the info so far...it would appear that the gun collection is going to grow...although slowly at first. I am planning on getting the XD40 or something similar and practicing with it for a couple of years before I really start to carry it a lot...the reason being that I'm in college and spend 90% of my time sitting in classrooms or doing homework. Not to mention I don't have a safe place to keep it right now as I'm still in the dorms for another 2 months. So for a while it will maybe come with me in my truck on trips and snowmobiling or hunting trips and stuff like that. The different gun for summer time definetly makes sense though. No matter what I get it will be practice, practice, practice first. So for now I'm trying to soak in as much information as I possibly can. Thanks again for all the replies, keep em coming. 0 -

I carry an XD45 compact on my hip in a Safariland holster. I did not like the holster that came with the XD. I've also carried full size 1911's before and they can be concealed in the winter months but tough in the summer. The XD seems fine to carry in all conditions. 0 -
Semis ride in OWB at 3:30 position, never did like IWB carry. S&W or Taurus snubbies ride in pocket holsters. 0 -

Working as a male stripper, I carry my 1911a1 ah soo.

Depends on the weather and what gun I am planning on carrying, but as a general rule:
If in jeans/slacks....Normally my Para Ordinance .45 "Carry" in an ankle holster. I sometimes wear an untucked shirt with a SOB holster, sporting my Para "carry", Warthog, Walther PPK, or a 2" revolver.
If in shorts..........Either a small fannypack with the Para, or
a .38 snub.
If cold weather and I have a jacket on, all bets are off on how, or what, I may carry.0 -
No holster. Just don't carry anything else in that pocket. Blow the lint out of it every week or so.
I wear it year around like that. Sometimes I carry a speed strip with extra rounds in my back pocket. And I always have extra ammo in my vehicle.
I slip it in my pocket even when I just go to work outside or to get the mail. I sometimes have to get a pocket patched or replaced once in a while. I also use one of the older wood grips with a tyler grip adapter instead of the factory rubber grips. This makes it easier to get out of your pocket, the rubber grips make it hang up.
Nobody has ever noticed it before there, either. Works even with shorts or dress slacks.
I used to carry it stuck in my belt cross-draw style but it occasionally started to slip down my leg.
If I feel the need for more firepower, (like going into the City of Detroit,) I usually put on a holster and carry a hi-cap auto and wear a jacket.0 -
I just back from the gunshop with my 642. It fits perfectly into my pocket, doesn't print, and I can hardly tell its there. I have a feeling this is going to be my gun for all seasons 0 -
...cross draw, inside the pant left hip...one .45 in the truck console, 12g in the truck.
...Ordering this holster from Mike Harlow, with a Texas Ranger star added on the holster where the trigger gaurd sits [:p]...belt type, right hip for the winter...[^]0
