NIB
Hi,
Fairly new to gun collecting and I seem to like NIB pre bans. My question is... Is is better to leave the gun in the original packaging or to remove it from the packaging and properly clean and lubricate the parts. It seems to me that leaving them in the original bags would quicken the deterioration and rusting of the firearms. Input please. Also What is your reccomendations on cleaning wood furniture elements of old rifles.

Just wanted to get everyones take on the term NIB. I have just recieved another gun today that was advertised as NIB in perfect condition upon close examination after recieving it the gun was certainly not new in the box and shows signs of many disassemblies as well as dirt within the gun. Lightly running my finger inside the reciever I pick up a nice carbon coating. This is at least the third gun I have purchased in this condition as being advertised as NIB. It appals me that the guns were not even properly cleaned before shipping. Am I just being anal? If I Purchase something at a premium for being NIB I expect it to be just that. I can handle minor handling marks but for a gun to be shipped to a customer and not even cleaned. What would you rank a seller that did this to you?

...Clean and put everything back in the box if you plan on keeping them NIB.
...Goop 'em with cosmoline, and they will out last you.
...Furniture cleaning?...as in original cosmo? If old military rifles, kerosene/mineral spirits work...as do a gazillion other things.
You don't want to use anything that's really "hot", that may ruin an old finish or suck out all the oil.
...60/40 or there abouts with BLO (boiled linseed oil/mineral spirits) will keep the wood, IF that is the finish that's on there. I think some of the older battle rifles had a shelac finish, though most were oil...[;)]
