300 Win Mag
This is one of my favorite cartridges for Elk hunting and long distance deer. It's popular with a lot of hunters, seemingly anyway. Shoots pretty flat, has great knock down power, and doesn't have much more recoil than the 30-06. It appears to have seen pretty limited use in the military, however.
Can someone here speak to why that might be? Is that because it was only developed in early 1960's? Seems like it could have been adopted more widely by now.

I shot a high powered rifle for the first time today, a 300 win mag Remington 700 I believe it was. I think I`m hooked on high power even though they are useless for hunting in Ohio. We were shooting a couple hundred yds away and shooting right through 1/4" steel like punching paper. It had a pretty nice scope that made shooting pretty easy. I will probably be looking for an old mod 70 winchester in 30.06 for my first and learn from that.

One with enough eye relief. Some years back a scoped .300Win. Mag. gave a friend the worst whack I've seen, he has a prominemt scar to remember it by.[:D]0 -
..whatever scope you decide on...go with Leo bases...they are like rock azz steady and won't move with the heavy recoil...[;)]
