kids hearing protection
Hopefully gonna introduce my daughter to the shooting range this week. She's 6 and a half.
What to do for good ear protection? I've got a good set of muffs for me, I'd like to get one her size (no problem there, local shop has extra small), but should I consider plugs and muffs, and if so, is there a good plug for a kid?

I have several pairs off ear muffs that My kids wear while at the range, They are adjustable. I just make sure they are on correctly before they can shoot. 0 -
I work on jet aircraft and they mandate that we use double hearing protection around the engines running. I would say that a gun sound blast, even a .22 is more than that. Better safe than sorry. I will admit that I rarely use double, accept for my 45-70 with a muzzle tamer.[B)] 0 -
I would suggest double. I frequently use it because if the muffs don't fit perfectly, they don't work as well. 0 -
Plugs and muffs. Use the foam disposable plugs- they work better than most- have a NRR around 34. READ the instructions on how to insert them. After inserting, hold a finger against the end for about 30 seconds, wait for the plug to expand and fit itself to ear. Don't have yer young'un going around like us old poops going "Huh?" all the time. 0 -

If we are talking about an outdoor range: Plugs and muffs only if other shooters are blasting away with loud calibers. Well-fitting muffs alone are OK if .22s are being used.
I've never found a plug that fits a 6-yr-old. Oversized plugs are uncomfortable, and you don't want any 6-yr-old to be uncomfortable.0 -
Plugs and muffs if above 22 cal., either one by itself is probably ok for 22 if fitted properly. Plugs are usually easier if shooting a rifle because then the stock doesn't dislodge the earmuff.
Foam plugs are usually the most comfortable. But, the typical yellow ones aren't as soft as some of the others. Look for some tapered foam plugs since they usually are made of a softer, more comfortable foam and are easier to get into smaller ears because of the taper.
FYI, a 22 cal rifle at ear level is usually about 130 dB+, 30-06 at ear level is usually about 160 dB+. I haven't seen data on handguns but anecdotally, from experience, more than likely I would bet that a 44 mag handgun will probably be over 170 dB at ear level. A single jet engine at about 100 ft is about 120 dB.0 -
Rocky I agree with your choice of foam plugs. You are off on the noise of a .22 rifle.
A .22 LR is about 85 dB maximum. No way is it anywhere near 130 dB.0
