Thinking of Becomming a TRAITOR! KIMBER?
...thinking of getting a Kimber! For those that have been living under a rock...I am a DIE HARD Colt fan...so this is a tough descision.
...I LIKE the way almost ALL Kimbers look, and yes, that is important to me too. I like the simple/plain Kimber custom II, in blue...some nice "touches" as for as match barrel/bushing, etc...for less than $700, new. OR, their Ultra Compact(?) the one similar to Colt Defender.
...I love the Eclipse in 10mm...and really like the Grand Raptor II...so you see, from the "basic" Custom II...to the Raptor, I like 'em all.
QUESTIONS:
1) Are after market parts about as plentiful and priced at about the same for Colt 1911's? Think I heard Kimber is PROUD of their after market parts, are they?
2) ANY known problems with the Kimbers? I dont mean "pittle" chit that I can correct for a few bucks myself, just any BIG/gunsmith/factory only type probs?
3) I don't expect them to appreciate at the rate Colt's do...but if you shoot a Kimber (as I would) do they depreciate a LOT? I take care of my guns VERY well, and my shootin Colt's still appreciate, will a Kimber?
DANG!forgot, almost..Does a Kimber field strip down like a Colt 1911/1911A11?

Question #1...I have not had to buy any replacement parts for either of the Kimbers in 8 + years of shooting, so I do not know
Question #2...Both of mine are older models. Both have been 100% reliable with many different loads, both reloads and factory ammo.
Question #3...Colts will continue to appreciate because Colt no longer sells Firearms to the general public. (Good thing, the last few years were not pretty) Kimber comes out with new models all the time. I do not believe they will ever appreciate in value as long as the company is cranking them out. The only exception would be some model they did not make very many of. JMHO....0 -
If you mean "Kimber" made aftermarket parts, then I have no idea. If you mean aftermarket parts in general (Wilson, Ed Brown, Chip, etc.) then any of these 1911 aftermarket parts that fit your Colts will fit the Kimber....or a RI, or a Spring., etc. Most any 1911 clone for that matter.
I think I've said it before but not long ago I had a NIB Kimber Ultra Carry II and a NIB Cold Defender in the shop at the same time. Side by side there was no comparison. The Kimber had a better fit and finish than the Colt. It's true the Colts will hold their value better than most others, but IMO you are just paying for the name. There are as good or better 1911's out there (fit and finish) for the same money or less. And if you buy a Kimber you'll have one of them.[;)]

Well it shouldn't be hard to find one... Kimber is second to only to Glock in the hands of sellers walking around the gunshow floors trying to get back their klinkies from a way over-produced firearm.... 0 -

with a stock Colt,
not so with my Kimber.
Traded my Kimber in for a

I love my Kimber Ultra CDP II. I carry it all the time, and bought it new several years back. Never, ever had anything go wrong with it yet and she'll eat anything you feed her. It's a great little gun and worth every dime. As far as them depriciating, I think that the name alone will at least maintain it's value as long as you take care of it, and you said you do. Excellent investment if your life depends on it. 0 -
parts are all the same except for the gold cup
series one will strip like a series 70
kimber II has a Schwartz safety similar to a series 80, but works off the grip safety vs. the trigger

edit: they do take any mag, it is the detonics that does not, do not use chip mccormick in the alloy or aluminium frames0 -
...thanks to all of you very much for the great replies! After the replies here, and on Ask The Experts...think Ill stick with my ponies; seems the cons outweigh the pros. Have a couple of Colt "deals" scoped out...dont know if they will pan out.
...but good things always come with time if these two dont materialize, it's just that Im jonesing BAD for another 1911!..been since last fall!![:0][:0][V]
