REI membership
I became a member of the REI outdoor store in 1974.
Once you are a member you remain a member for life and never have to pay the initial sign up fee again.
Well, I never used them or my membership again but I wondered if they still had me as a member.
I contacted them and sure enough I was listed as a member since 1974 and they sent me a brand new membership card free of charge.
They pay a percentage of your total yearly purchases back to you in the form of a check at the end of every year among other benifits.
It is amazing to me they still had a record of me from a time before the computor age[^]

They are also anti fishing. That is how bad they are.
I used to like to go into their store and ask the sales people "where do you keep your live bait and or power bait/ I want to go fishing".[;)][:o)]
Or go in and ask them "where the gun counter is located? I will be headed to bear country and you never know when you need to drop a rogue bear"[;)]0 -

Where else would you get camping gear?
I am not a big fan of REI and primarily get my stuff either online or in milsurplus stores and just wondering if there's a better place than REI.0 -

I like to go look at stuff and touch it before I buy, last thing I bought from REI was a pair of hiking boots, pants and a fleece jacket 'cause I needed them right there and then, otherwise I'd go look and then order it. The main reason I wanted to see if my membership was still active was because I want to climb the huge rock in Seattle. If you are a member it is free. If you are not a member it is 15.00 or something like that.

Ahh yes, I remember when REI came to Northern California. They had a much larger selection of finely crafted Norwegian backpacking supplies than our local Army/Navy surplus did.
I was introduced to that tree hugging yuppie kibble known as GORP back then, which actually sounds pretty good about right now if it was sprinkled over some ice cream.0 -
Went to REI once. They could fix the tent pole that broke on me in Sturgis. (small tornado hit camp) Looked around the store, didn't see any reason to ever go back.

REI Pinnacle - at 65' (21m) it is the tallest free standing climbing structure in the world. Weighing 110 tons, and has over 1000 modular climbing holds. It is the first indoor climbing structure to use thin-shell concrete technology to simulate real rock. See the surface in this picture. We were having too much fun to notice the programmed theatrical lighting that simulates the path of the sun.
Post 612's evaluation of REI Pinnacle:
Challenging (we got a real workout in 2 hours); tons of fun for all levels of climbers; the thin-shell concrete and the pocket holds really help you forget that this structure was not made by The Creator who formed this great country. Staff was excellent; courteous, helpful, cheerful, (sounds like they are scouts - we forgot to ask if they were). In a word - Superb. When can we come back!0 -

I'ma member but I dropped $200 at one time so it payed to join,ait bought anything since,campmore has better price, if wall mart has it even cheaper. 0 -
The REI brand is good quality and decent price....provided they're making what you're looking for. 0 -

In 2008, there will be one. I'm unsure of the location, but I'm betting it'll be darned close to Bass Pro right by the old Stapleton runways at I70/I270.0 -
...Hmmm, that is amazing to keep semi "un-important" records that long!!
...The police lost my arrest records from the early 70's when they shortly after that changed them over onto a computer....glad they weren't as diligent as REI...[:D]0 -
