The best beer - ever! Home Brew Heaven!
Well, I just sampled my Ashville Brewers Irish Stout that I bottled just 12 days ago. Holy Crap! It is no lie the best beer I have ever had! And I didn't have to wait 6 weeks! Similar to a Guiness Draft but with somehow some chocolate hints. Black as tar.
I had 2 bottles so far that were not carbonated and guess what? They are the GD flippy bottles that my wife got me! They are going STRAIGHT into the garbage!
The good news is that this beer is SO good, that I even drank the flat ones from the crap flippies. The beer that was flat from my last batch with these f'n flippies went down the drain (amber beer).
My recycled Grolsch bottles are 100% so far (opened 3 so far).
I highly recommend for you home brewers to try this stout next. I am going to get started on the next batch next weekend. I can't imagine my 5 gallons lasting too long!

On a side note: I had some Absynth last night that a friend of mine got overseas - Whoaa! Anyone ever try Absynth? 136 proof!

Did some computer work for a soon-to-be-former Director of something or other the other day, she "tipped" me with 2 4 packs of Sam Smith's Oatmeal Stout.

Sounds like a good kit to try.
When I got back to the states after my tour in Germany (early 80's).
I could not believe just how bad American beer really was. All of it to me taste like nothing more than a cup of sugar dumped into 12 oz very weak coffee.
You like good strong beers. Try Robust Porter Beer, Russian Imperial Stout or the "XX" Stout kits from Home Brewers.

The last batch of good stuff that I bottled was a Black Raspberry wine made from Black and Rasp berries mixed together that I had left over from last fall. Corked 31 bottles in Feb and only have 11 left. The ole lady has gave most of it away to people that wants a bottle after sampling someone else's.

From Asheville Brewers I have made the ESB five times. I rate that as the best beer I have ever had.
I also have made their German Ale kit. It was ok.
I have made stout five times from other kits when I lived back in Georgia and it was outstanding. I will have to follow your lead and try the Asheville Brewers stout. I do love the heavy black Irish ale.
Andy at Asheville Brewers says that a key to their top quality kits is the liquid yeast. I am not going to argue with Andy the Brewmaster.
One coincidence is that Andy and I went to the same high school in Atlanta. We were five years apart and never knew each other in school.
We both prefer the NC mountains to the megalopolis hell of Atlanta.
ps Do the search and you will see that I also recommended that you ditch the Grolsch bottles and just use regular beer bottles with caps.
I have NEVER had a bottle fail to carbonate, and I have made, oh, I would say 30 batches of beer. At 50 bottles per batch, that is 1,500 bottles.0 -
...Sounds good, and I don't make beer anymore...used to. Never had a kit just went to a brew store and bought the ingiedients; home brew is far better than store bought.
...Tried bottles, they were a pain in the azz. I just bought and used pint size fruit jars, a lot easier than capping bottles; and worked just as well...[;)]0
