Off-duty Chicago cop beats female bartender

I have encountered that problem before. Cutting off a cop is sometimes hard to do. They say "I'm a cop- I can get out of a DUI." But about two years ago an off duty Chicago cop killed two teen-agers is a alcohol related accident. By his own admission he had well over a case of beer-plus mixed drinks. What I suggest is calling the department that they work for all letting the supervisor know the officer is intoxicated/causing problems and wants MORE drinks. And then ask the supervisor if it is OK to give them more.

Needs to be fired and see some jail time. Idiots like that give the rest of us a bad name. [:(!]

If state law prohibits serving drinks after a certain hour or serving to a drunk person, calling his supervisor wont help. The supervisor cannot tell the bartender its OK to break the law.

I have seen the video several times on my local news. If he beat her up for no reason as it appears, he needs to be fired and prosecuted.

Saw this on TV. What I find is wierd is they put him on suspension first. Why didn't they just fire this maggot. I hope he gets some serious time, and it's not because he's a cop. Because, he's a drunken women beater.[:(!]

By the time she's finished, she'll be set for life, or should be, and rightfully so.

Sarge..... In just about every large police agency officers cannot be "instantly fired". There is a proceedure they must go through to let him go.

He can be immediately suspended, which he was. They then conduct an investigation and have a hearing before he can be fired. Even this clown has rights, just like you have.

Summarily firing him would be like the police arresting you for DUI and sending you to jail for 6 months "without" you getting a trial. Iam sure you would not like that or think its fair.

Because our law basically provides that someone is innocent until proven guilty (by a trial). Its part of due process. A part I am in favor of. If they fire him and he is found not guilty them the PD is on the hook for unlawfull termination and the guy may be able to retire early.

Laredo: That's not the same at all.

You're mixing up the Constitutional rights guaranteed to every citizen in the US with the priveleges contractually granted to employees in certain jobs through extortion by exceptionally vociferous and powerful unions.

I'm a security guard part time. If I am found by my employer to be under law-enforcement investigation, I am immediately suspended without pay until and unless I am able to provide a document from the police stating that I am no longer under investigation.

If I am ever officially charged with any crime, I am immediately terminated without recourse or appeal.

That's because the job's not union, and thus my employer gives me whatever it legally has to. It has NOTHING to do with my individual rights.

Did you watch the video? I don't care if he is not guilty of anything, he came behind the bar, and beat the crap out of that girl!

    Bullzeye........... It is the same.

My point is "due process". Whether it comes from the Constitution or a "Peace officers bill of rights" which is in affect here in calif, its still "due process". Its the same thing, just guaranteed by different documents.

Wow, priveleges granted by extortion, thats a new approach. Iam sure the British thought that was the case when the US Constitution was ratified by our forefathers.

Its to bad you work for a security guard company and not a police department. You probably would have more job protection in place if you did.

Normally the burden of proof is on the accuser. In your case, you must provide written proof that you are not under investigation to avoid suspension, boy thats backward.

Undoubtably so. But I think that's the problem. The protection you get has nothing to do with how sensitive to abuse your job is.

I sit in a Dollar General as an unarmed and toothless detterent to shoplifting, but my company (correctly) recognize that due to the authority inherent to the job, a criminal security guard has a greater capacity than most to abuse the public trust.

A cop has ten times more authority than a guard, and ten times more potential for abusing it. One would think that would mean he is subject to 10 times more scrutiny and preemptive caution in order to protect the public from rogue cops, for example. You would be wrong.

And this is due to labor unions and their demands, nothing more. It is the same with teachers, federal and state employees, and many other heavily unionized organizations.

Maybe so, but it's a good example of what I'm trying to say. My power to potentially abuse the public trust is nearly nonexistent, but the little bit I have renders me that much more subject to what the company considers necessary measures to ensure that trust isn't abused.

I don't think this one needs a trial since everyone across the country has seen 30 seconds of video footage proving his guilt.

I saw this on the news last night and I was disgusted. I was more sickened by the pathetic losers that stood by and watched it happen. The one guy decided to just yell and point at him rather than getting involved. The guy could have killed her.

I don't care who he is, who he works for or what happens afterwards. I'd never stand and watch something like that happen. He may have 30 lbs on me but he was drunk off his a$$. I would have at least done my best to end it and if nobody had the balls to help, well, I guess I would have struggled with him until one of us got tired. The video is pathetic.

Oh yeah, I also noticed at the end of the video on the news last night, it showed them arresting him at his home. They didn't even put cuffs on him. They just let him get in the back of the car for a ride downtown.

That guy should be gone. I don't care what union you've got behind you, there's no excuse for that kind of behavior at any time! Most criminals behave better than that.

Besides being a drunk, he didn't appear to be in that great of shape either. Wouldn't want to lose a guy like that.

the other guy wasn't on a diet of steer roids and booze either, what was he gonna do poke him in the eye with a cocktail fork[}:)] after all chicago has some pretty strict gun laws. one of the reasons i try to avoid heavy drinkers. what if the cop was armed and someone tried to stop him? would the drunk guy have elevated force? then he'd be facing murder...

What ever union he blongs to has nothing to do with the fact that when a cop gets into trouble that most of the time the the local goernment wont get push it. They get a free pass because they are a cop not because they are a union member

A local cop was nailed for DUI and it was dismissed because of lack of evidence He only blew a .19 and that didn't neccisarily mean he was drunk He did not receive this special treatment because he was a union member!

And when this puke walks it wont be because he is a union member

I have alot of respect for Police officers but it pisses me off to no end when thr good old boy crap starts and one of them walks for something any of use would rot in jail for

It looks like the city and P.D. are already distancing themselves (publicly) from this raging drunk. I'd be real surprised if his employers didn't hang his carcass on the fence.
I'd also be surprised if the (Smokin' HOT!) bartender didn't have to move to another city to avoid reprisals.

That's what gets me. Reprisals! Why would any cop with 2 brain cells have anything against her? Or are they all dopes? What'd she do besides get the crap beaten out of her? And what can Chicago PD say to her? "You had a fine officer fired" ? Give me a break.

I think she consented to the beating. It is quite obvious from the video...

I can't see any reason for his actions and certainly don't condone them.

If what happened is as it appears (and I have no reason to think otherwise) this guy should be charged and sentenced as anyone else would and should.

Also, I think the judge should take into consideration the severity of the assault, just as he would if the guy were anything other than a police officer. His occupation should not be considered one way or the other though.

I have never had contact with any Chicago cops but have friends that have and they told me they were just trying to get directions and the Chicago police officer was rude and threatening. I also know a son of a friend and was shocked to hear that he joined the Chicago Police a few years ago. He did not seem the "Chicago cop" type. That being said, Chicago is known to be a tough town and I suspect the cops need to be tough as well. I don't see the need to be rude or nasty, though. Some of the toughest cops I know are also the most polite and professional. If you tick them off however, I think you'll quickly find out just how tough they can be. And I am sure that most Chicago cops are good people just trying to do a very difficult job.

From my own experience, I have some thoughts. Twice in the last 20 years, I publicly criticized another police officer. Once I put it in writing in the form of a written complaint to his department (one of the most difficult decisions I think I've ever had to make as a police officer) and just recently I criticised another police officer and his chief for the for poor job that was done of an investigation. I might discuss the latter issue further in these forums because the people here generally provide me with a very valuable perspective into how people think.

I also know about the negative things that stress can bring out in a person and the frustration that comes from working in LE. And I had it pretty easy in comparison to a lot of police officers.

    I apologize for rambling on...

    As you were....
