I know the Eagle is strong,
But others I have might not be as much.

    Taurus Millenium Pro
    Glock 27
Sig P239 (which is pretty sturdy)
    etc.

Splits are normaly caused by defective brass, or rarely by firing the cartridge in the wrong chamber (IOW say 38super brass in a 40 chamber). Assuming that the case was indeed 40S&W (not just the headstamp), than I'd say that you simply ran into a defective piece of brass.
It's unlikly that spliting a case wall would distroy a firearm, as the base/web was still intact (now blowing the base off or blowing out through the web is another story).

Contact Olen/Winchester with the lot #. BTW, they don't make "special" brass depending on the intended bullet weight,

    Contact Winchester!

I contacted them about some white box ammo that I bought that the brass (around the head stamps) was dirty. The ammo itself was fine. They offered to pay the shipping back to them for replacement. I declined the offer of replacement because the ammo was ok to shoot, I just though that it looked shabby with gunk in the lettering and around the primmers.

Well they still sent me a coupon for $10 off my next Winchester ammo purchase that is good at any retailer that sells thier ammo.
