Holographic sights, are they worth the money?
Been shopping around for some good short range sights for an AR15 that I'm building. Anyone have any experience with these holographic sights? EOtech brand is rather pricey, what about the Eotech clones?

Watch out when buying these Eotech clones. Some are just red dots.
There is a guy selling clones on ebay that are real "clones" to the 551 EOtech. They are halographic, fog proof, water proof, use the same lense and are night vision compatable. They are sold for about $160.00 (Buy It Now). I bought one for my Bushy, and it works great. I have put about 700 rounds threw it with this sight and it did not loose zero. Just MHO, hope this helps...[:)]

What type of batteries does it take? I've ben wanting to put a Eotech on my AR but just can't seem to want to spend that kind of money. That is more reasonable if it's good quality.0 -
I just bought a couple of the Bushnell HOLOsight XLP Low-profile
sights, $ 210.00 Each, and like it a lot. Much smaller than a red dot sight, virtually no parallax problems, and 100 hours+ of battery life.

I have several EoTech sights and you get what you pay for. I have both AA and N battery models. I also used to run a shop where we were EoTech dealers. Out of about 200 EoTech sights sold not a single one was returned. I am very impressed with them. They are not cheap that is for sure and you might have to save a little while for it but it is well worth it. 0 -
It uses "N" alkiline batteries. ljwrench, I was in the same boat about wanting an EOtech....I did alot of reaserch on these and other clones and found these are the closest your going to get.....It is a very sturdy sight, and reliable thus far. I would recomend it to anyone who wants an EOtech, but doesn't want to spend 350.00+ on a sight...

I have eotech on the AR and a bushy on the way for my 22 bullseye pistol. eotech makes the bushy , from what i can tell it just doesn't have the metal shroud over the sight. im sure there are some internal differnces, I don't think you can go wrong with either one. 0 -
EoTech makes the Bushnell. The metal shroud and the better tougher buttons are the main changes. I don't know if there are any internal diffs. I have a friend with an earlier EoTech and they have the same buttons as the bushnell does now. It has the metal shroud. It works fine. 0 -
I like my Eotech on my HK carbine. I do not like them on the AR as they are wider then my gun and it looks funny too me. I just picked up a C-More site for my AR pistol and like it so far but have not shot it yet. C-More is a very popular AR site. 0 -
I did a bunch of homework on these awhile back, including putting them through their paces on an M16. I was impressed.
N, AA or CR123 watch-battery models are available. If the model number ends with a 1 it uses N's, 2 indicates it uses AA's and 3 is the CR123 model.
Very fast on target, highly reliable, 30 adjustment levels of brightness, viewing area is the largest of any optic available (double that of the Aimpoint), designed to be used with both eyes open to maintain peripheral vision, infinite eye relief, designed for you to focus on the target NOT the dot, can be co-witnessed with iron sights, 1100 hr. battery life (AA) with selectable 4 or 8 hr. auto shutdown.
They have dual low battery indicators. When you power up the reticle will flash for a few seconds to indicate low battery. If the battery becomes low during use the reticle will blink when you fire a round, but you'll still have a lot of power left. It also doesn't dim down as the battery weakens. Your brightness setting is fully maintained until the batteries becomes completely useless.
IMHO, their totally parallax free operation is a huge advantage over other optics. The screen can be almost completely obscured with mud, junk, etc. (or even broken), but if you can see the dot anywhere in the viewing area you'll be on target. The 1 MOA dot is your point of impact no matter where it's located in the screen.
As for ruggedness, it's lens is a fixed 3/16" laminated plastic piece and the electronics are contained within a solid resin block. Because of this no individual components can be replaced, but it also means it's impossible for anything in there to shake loose. As an indication, they're rated for .454 Casull handguns and are used by US military forces on everything from .50 BMG rifles to grenade launchers. Another clue is that EOtech recommends only Energizer batteries because others can't take the g-forces the unit is capable of handling. They're a VERY solid piece of equipment.
They've been a US military issue item for a few years now, with over 66,000 ordered. USMC Force Recon alone is currently fielding a couple of thousand.

I've got the EoTech 552 on my AR, and am totally impressed with it.
Doug, you can still use your iron sights, and just look through the lens if the batteries are totally out.0 -

If they are using them successfully in combat, I think it's gone past the gimmick stage. Thats why I'm looking at them now and not a few years ago.0 -

However, in defensive shooting your logical goal is to be the first to score hits. I've found that the EOtech does help you get rounds on target alot faster. This isn't just a judgement call, becaue the timer doesn't lie.
I'm normally against optics on defensive guns, especially battery operated, but this one is workable because it doesn't interfere with ability to use the iron sights.0 -

These are all good, but IMHO you can't beat that huge field of view on the EOtech. This, combined with the totally parallax free reticle, is the primary contributor to it's speed. For me this
is the primary reason for mounting a 1X optic.
