Tasting Wood
When I go hunting I usually build a small fire to keep warm and roast a sandwich.
As a pipe smoker I will light my pipe from an ember from the fire and discovered you can taste the differences in the embers.
I sure cannot identify what I am tasting but thought it was interesting information to pass on.

i would not make a habit of it, you run across just a small tiny piece of poison ivy or oak, or even a piece that has contacted it, you'll regret it, and may cost you your life 0 -

Yes. I don't smoke a pipe (or anything else), but my chimney gives off different smells, depending on what's in thestove.
I burn mostly oak, but also cut and split whatever other trees trimmed from the edges of fields or taken down in thinning operations. No hickory here, but oak smells similar; black oak is more distinctive than white or bur oak, especially while the bark is burning or smoldering. Aspen is distinctive but not especially pleasant. Elm and hackberry are not very aromatic, and what aroma they do have is not appealing. Wild black cherry smells delicious. I just gave a sack of cherry chips to a friend who makes his own sausage. I plan to throw some of my venison in with his, and we'll see how we like the results.
There's no sassafrass within several hundred miles of here, but I'd like to try a couple of armloads. Maybe I'll bring some back from my next visit to Ozark relatives.0 -
