    They got the guy already....he was serving, they said 2 life sentences, and was on a medical transfer.....

    That was said on Fox, just a couple of minutes ago...got the guy at a pawn shop apparantly..

    Man held in deputy's death has long record

    Police say Michael Mazza is the man who shot BSO Deputy Paul Rein Wednesday morning.

    Michael Mazza, a 40-year-old Coral Springs man who is accused of fatally shooting a Broward sheriff's deputy Wednesday morning, has an extensive criminal record, ranging from drug possession to armed robbery charges, public records show.

    In 1991, Mazza pleaded guilty to grand theft charges and two years later to possession of cocaine and drug paraphernalia charges, public records show.

    That same year, 1993, Mazza pleaded guilty to another possession of cocaine charge, records show.

    In 1997, he was sentenced to five years on a kidnapping and robbery conviction in Hillsborough County, from 1997 to 2002. During that time, Mazza received two disciplinary reports, according to Gretl Plessinger, a spokeswoman for Florida's Department of Corrections. One report was for lying to staff, the other for possession of contraband.

    Mazza was released in 2002, but ended up back in the state prison system two years later.

    In 2004, he was sentenced to three years on robbery charges from Palm Beach County. During that time, he received one disciplinary report for unauthorized use of drugs.

    He was freed in 2006 on a conditional release, Plessinger said.

    Earlier this year, in February, Mazza was arrested in connection with an armed robbery charge. His 9 a.m. trial on Wednesday stemmed from those charges.

    Police say he held up a Coral Springs Bank of America branch and drove off with $24,000 in cash, before slamming his black Chevy Malibu into another car.

    He was transported to the hospital and so were two women from the other vehicle.

    In that case, Mazza was also charged with aggravated fleeing and eluding a law enforcement officer, violating probation and reckless driving, records show.

    Thanks for the heads-up. My son is a sheriff's Office Detention Officer and transports prisoners for court and medical. I forwarded to him as an officer safety reminder.
