Fishkiller, don't sweat it right now. If you really can't then you can't. This is especially true if you are a relatively new Christian. Tithing and giving is an act of sacrifice, obedience, and also an invest which has a return. It is also an act of trust in GOD. Tithing is not just however a religious rite. GOD is love, and if you have received the free gift of Christ's sacrifice than you surely will not "burn". If you are not able, or believe that you are not able at this point then again, don't sweat it. And if there is something that you don't understand right now, pray about it and you will. [:)]

You say that because you do not understand the moral of the parable.
The rich men gave only what it did not hurt them to give. They gave with the wrong motive, much like many in churches give nowadays,making a big deal out of it to impress others and gain prestige. Therefore, their gift was worthless to the kingdom of God. Their motive for giving was selfish. It is the heart that counts with God, not the material.
The old woman trusted God completely to provide for her needs, and she gave her all, literally putting her money where her mouth was. She loved God and trusted him at his word to provide her needs, and put herself at physical risk proving it. Other scriptures in the word teach us that this kind of faith God rewards, both here on Earth, and after death in the greater life, that we have with God, where she will be exalted, and put over whole kingdoms.
This life, here on Earth, is in the small, and in relation to the life we are being prepared for, which is "in the great", where one day is like 10,000 years. Our life here is like a brief puff of steam out of a kettle, compared to the life we can have after our death here, that we cannot see now. It is a test, and an opportunity. We have to make our own decisions here, and we and others must suffer the consequences of those decisions. God does not interfere, most of the time, with the life that He has set in motion and which we are a part of. That's why babies sometimes die, and injustice prevails everywhere, that makes men doubt the existence of God. Otherwise, it would not be a test of faith, which is really a gift to those who are born into the Kingdom of God, which is now, has been, and always will be, even when the Earth is no more. It is a gift, because it is an opportunity to receive everlasting life, that we otherwise could not have, and which we cannot earn by any kind of "good works". Acts of true faith, like the widow who gives her all, are the acid test that divides the true believer from the unbeliever and pretender. The double-edged sword that divides between spiritual life and spiritual death.
The old widow has believed and tested it over time, and has faith. She does not give her offering for approval in the eyes of others, but in obedience to God. She has learned the real meaning of life and is determined to live by it, regardless of the cost to her. She values the love of God over her personal short-term security.

The tithe that God says is His is specifically set at 10% of the believer's increase. Anything above that would be an "offering".
It is not necessarily 10% of your paycheck. Most of the faithfull do give 10% of their earnings, but that nearly always is more offering than it is tithe, if you understand that we have to pay for gas to get to work, and the care and purchase of our shelter, food and clothing and education etc., etc. Ten percent of whatever we have left over after these earthly essentials, before we indulge in stuff and entertainment and guns and motorcycles, etc[:D]should be given to God's work here on earth, usually to a church or mission that does such work.
"Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's (taxes), and unto God that which is Gods (tithe)." This, if you wish to be obedient to God's word.

Giving a tithe is an Old testament law, not a New testament principle. In the New testament 100 percent of your income belongs to God. He just allows you to use it according to both His and your needs.
The law was totally done away with in Christ, and we are now under a new law, the law of grace, not the law of condemnation. Here's just one way Paul put it, "For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth". Romans 10:4.
Jesus said it this way, "Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.'
'For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled". Matthew 5:17-18.
Here He leaves us only three options. Either the law is still in effect, every jot and tittle of it, or it has been fulfilled, all of it, or heaven and earth have passed away.
What has passed away is the law. Jesus again, says, "The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it". Luke 16:16. Not only does Jesus say here that the law is finished, He specifically identifies the point at which the law ended. Matthew 11:13 says it much the same way, "For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John". The law ended with John the Baptist, when the Kingdom of God was ushered in.
Finally, attempting to keep the law and live under grace at the same time, is, according to Paul, an act of spiritual adultery. Here's the way he put it, "Know ye not brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth?'
'For the womanh which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth; but if he be dead, she is loosed from the law of her husband.'
'So then if, while her husband liveth, she be married to another man, she shall be call an adulteress: but if her husband be dead, she is free from that law; so that she is no adulteress, though she be married to another man.'
'Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ; that ye should be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.'
'For when we were in the flesh, the motions of sins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death.'
'But now we are delivererd from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter". Romans 7:1-6
Here he tells us, in no uncertain terms, that we are dead to the law, and the law is dead to us. We cannot serve a dead law, even though we might deceive ourselves into thinking we do.
And finally consider who it is that compels you to pay the tithe, even in the face of dozens of New testament scriptures indicating otherwise. Aren't they people who have a vested (or should we say 'pocketbook') interest in your doing so?

Well said...but I would further this by saying that you really cannot afford not to tithe. God will take care of the rest. Believe it or not, this is the ONLY thing in the Bible that God tells us to test Him in. He promises us great blessings if we are obedient in tithing. I have found that when we tithe regularly, we have an abundance...even though we should not; and when we do not, we are always short on money.
I've said it before, I cannot afford not to tithe...My God is able to take care of the rest. As for you and your case, that is between you and the Lord. Pray over it and do as the Lord leads.[:)]0
