How I miss the old systems when you actually had to do something to set up a system (HJ), It is all automatic and foolproof(yeah, so they say) without operator intervention. Tom

Not sure the models you are noting- we had a KY8 I think it was called. I was a 2531, Field radio operator; after the 2533 guys set it up, we got to talk on it. Seeing as that model is at least 40 years old, I'm guessing the only place you'd find one of those is in an antique store. 0 -
My dad was in communications in the army, i dont know his MOS number but he told me he would sit in this thing they called a RAT RIG, and he would send messages and the such. 0 -
Dolfan, yeah, I guess I should have elaborated. These are all old crypto systems that we used to keep our secrets secret! However, Johnny Walker compromised the kg13 system and gave the soviets the keycards and they read all our top secret messages during the viet nam war. Pretty much gave them a leg up on how the war was fought.
That was elephant CAGE also. It was the (FLAIR) flr 9 direction finder antenna field.
For those not involved, military intelligence is another whole nother world. Especially the communications side of the house. Tom

There was an Army guy even earlier than Walker who was giving the Russians copies of most of the encrypted traffic. I was an 055 (communications monitor) & I spent several months in the crypto security section. All the work we did was useless since this guy was giving it all away. 0 -
