Hunter ed nightmare..........
Im 34 years old and I have to take one so I can hunt where I live. I either have to spend 12 freakin hours(6 nights)in a classroom or do it online and then take 18 tests and then drive 4 freakin hours to Buffalo Wyoming to take a 100 point entrance test, then an all day field test, then another competency test. (Im an experienced hunter) Im so annoyed over this but I have no choice. I work nights so I have the drive in front of me I guess.

why didnt you have the class when you was a kid ? wouldnt the class be good from one state to another? 0 -
I didn't have to but I took it again twice with my sons and ended up helping the instructor. Didn't expect a test at the end but this old fart aced it anyway [:p]. 0 -

I have taken it 3 times. Once when I was about 10 and twice with my kids. Enjoyed the heck out of it each time. No biggie. Just do it.0 -
I did it when I was in college with a buddy of mine. We were like 8 to 10 years older than everyone else. I'll never forget that the questions on the test were along the lines of "You pulled the trigger, but the gun didn't fire. Do you a. look down the barrel and pull the trigger again; b. have a friend look down teh barrel and you pull the trigger; c. find a stick to jam down the barrel; or d. put the safety on, point the gun in a safe direction, open the action, blah blah blah.
On top of this, if you couldn't read, there was a tape that played along, so that you'd just fill in the dots on the scantron, if need be.0 -
I'm 34 and just took it a couple weeks ago so I can hunt out of state. 10 hrs in class over 2 days, test took all of 2 minutes. easy as pie.
You need it at 34 to hunt in your own state? Check your regs. and see if you can produce a past hunting license if you still need the course. I know some states have that. Either a hunter safety card or a previous hunting license to acquire another license. Just a thought there.0 -
Most of the time it's not required if you were born before a certain date...and most places do not require it if you've held that type of license before. Idaho requires hunter saftey classes and an Archery class, but I have not had either...All I had to do was state that I held these licenses before...it was the same way in VA and WV. 0 -
Several years ago I moved to North Carolina.
I went to get my hunting license. The law says that every hunter must take the safety course.
Well, I was 51 years old, and had been hunting for 25 years. It would have been very inconvenient for me to take the course, and I didn't figure I would learn very much.
I just went up to the Corner Pantry that sold licenses, and told them I wanted to buy a license. She asked for my last year's license. I told her, I had a Ga. license last year, and I have thrown it away.
She sold me a North Carolina license, no problem. In other words, I bluffed her. The subject of hunter ed never came up.0 -

You have to be born before 1966 in Wyoming. I lived in Illinois before and I was never required to take it. It will be worth it though. Im gonna kill all I can so I can get my freezer filled though[:D]

if you cant read? then you more than likely wont understand the question when read. well what about the handicapped who cant see or move? i dont think they will be hunting0 -

I went and took the test without taking the class- which you can do if you go to the district wildlife office (1 hour drive). Took 10 minutes. I missed one question and it was a stupid one- my mistake.
I say, hunter ed is good for people unfamiliar with guns and gun safety, but a waste for people who know guns. Whatever happened to your dad teaching you?0 -

Took the Colorado class. 5 of us old farts, and 25 youngsters (4H sponsored class) enjoyed being with the youngsters, assisted instructor on the firing line (even loaned him a coupla kid sized 22s for the live fire) Kinda neat to see the 10 yr old GIRLS that were waiting for their first deer hunt (ranch kids). 0 -
WOW! I haven't taken a Hunter Safety course in probably about 15 years. The last one was in Kansas in the 1980's. Seems like it was 2 nights, 4 hrs each night. A couple of easy written tests. No field tests. Have all states as gone to these long courses now? 0 -

Contrary to popular belief, while the main focus of HUNTER EDUCATION is Safety, it has been expanded to deal with Sportsmanship and Conservation. In Washington the course has four measures, all of which need to be passed or the student fails. These are presence to all courses (as one guy claims above, challenging the course by taking the test is not legal in WA); score of 80% (60/75) on written test; passing field and live fire courses; passing the "attitude" test.
The course is intended to show students how to be safe hunters as well as teaching them to be goodwill ambassadors of the sport. In case you haven't noticed, the reputation of all hunters is soiled when slobs mascarading as hunters have interactions with the non-hunting public.0 -

Right on. I'm a Washington State hunters safty instructor, just got through with our last class of the year, 18 students ranging in age from 9 1/2 to 32 years. Great class, average of 72 out of 75 on the written test, everyone had a good attitude and we had fun at the range.
We have them shoot 223 rifles and shoot trap with 20ga youth model shotguns.
Theres nothing like watching a 10yr old kid break thier first pidgeon. We get alot of young adults taking the class just for the firearms safty aspect of it. I enjoy teaching hunters safty alot, it's my turn to give something back.
