I'm close to a Ph.D. And in my world, they are the BRAVE who walk out of the program. The rest of us suffer through it because we don't want to be that guy who quit.
Also, see my post about gardening. Getting a Ph.D. does NOT make you adept at everyday things that matter, and I'm walking proof.
Also, look at the starting and ceiling salaries of Ph.D.'s relative to B.S.'s or B.A.'s.....except in a few fields, there isn't much difference. Where there is a difference between salary for the bachelor and the doctor, the Master's degree can usually close the gap.
The only legitimate criticism about not having a Ph.D. involves a person who is naturally curious but is either 1) too stupid to get the Ph.D (and that really does take some doing; a complete idiot can get the Ph.D if he has enough gumption), or 2) too lazy to get the Ph.D.

Oh, I graduated, I just don't have a Ph.D. I have an Ed.D. and most people with Ph.D.s look down their noses at those with Ed.D.s because they consider the former to be a superior degree (and it is in fact). The length of time and degree requirements are generally higher for the Ph.D. than for the Ed.D. (At least in the Humanities, I don't know about the Sciences.) 0 -
I stand corrected and I appologize Mr. Pig because I was under the impression that you held a PhD. I can identify with you since I hold an Engineers Degree, which is a doctorate level Professional Degree, but is not a PhD. In my profession I have also found that many people holding an engineering PhD feel that their degree is superior. 0 -

The irony is that most college professors have Ph.D.s but most administrators, including college presidents, have Ed.D.s
So the very people the Ph.D.s scorn end up being their bosses.
I actually have four degrees and each is in a different field of study. I am not impressed by someone with a BA, MA and PHD in the same field. That's child's play. Try starting over with a new major for each degree! Now, THAT'S real utter stupidity!!!!

Certainly there are plenty of (monetarily) successful people who never went to college. But like it or not, most did. I'm not one of them, but statistically, degree holders earn more than those without a degree.
Not everyone needs or wants to to go to college, but some professions require a degree and if you want to pursue that career you have no choice.
Having a degree is no guarantee of wisdom, although IMO it does take at least average intelligence to earn a degree. The truly stupid people generally don't make it (unless Daddy is a U.S. Senator with influence over the local law school and don't get me started on that).
Having a degree is no guarantee fo financial success, either. Just look at me. I made more as a truck driver than I do now. But I'm happier with what I do now. Money isn't everything. It's important, but it isn't everything.
Last time I checked the statistics, about 24% of Americans over the age of 25 have a Bachelors degree. About 10% have a Masters with 2% having an academic Doctorate and it's 4% if you include M.D.s and J.D.s which are seen more as professional degrees than academic.
World-wide, 99% of the population never sees the inside of a college classroom so taking just one college class puts you in the top 1% of educated people.
A law degree is technically a Doctorate (Juris Doctorate, Doctor of Law) but I have yet to hear a lawyer call himself doctor. If any did, the nearest Ph.D. would beat him to death. They can barely stand the folks with Ed.D.s calling themselves doctor; they would really flip out if a lawyer tried it. [:)] They prefer that "Esquire" thing, anyway.
The people with multiple doctorates really freak me out. I can't even imagine going through that Hell more than once. My representative in Congress is an M.D. and a J.D. (well, he represents the district where I live, he hardly represents me or my opinions since he thinks Castro isn't quite Leftist enough). All that education to be a Communist Democrat. Oh well.
I've been teaching college courses for 13 years and many of my students struggle. Not only do they find the work challenging, but they have to deal with money issues, family issues, work issues, and trying to go to school is a real hardship for many. That's why they and their families are so excited and so proud when they manage to graduate.
And THAT'S why those of us who did get through the program and graduated don't really appreciate it when those who DID NOT sit back and say crap like "college is for idiots" or "all college graduates are dummies" or any of the other stupid comments posted in this thread.
If you choose to skip college, that's fine and it's your choice. But please spare those of us who did go your blue-collar elitism.0 -

Matter of fact, it got quite physical the other day in court. Seems like this fella didn't understand how he could lose his kids, wife, house and still have to pay child support. He laid hands on, and threatened to kill his wife's lawyer. The lawyer was a female.
Mistake.
Another time, an 18 year old meth head decided he didn't need to listen to the judge. He did, however, listened to 4 deputies and pepper spray after a spirited struggle.
That pepper spray was some strong caca. It cleared the courtroom. I can still hear his mother screaming/pleading as she watched her son twist off, "Stop Billy! You're making it worse!"
No doubt.
I also witnessed a young mentally retarded man, upon receiving his sentence from the court, jump the railing and grab the 100 year old bailiff's gun. The judge comes out from underneath the bench with his pistol and is pointing it at this guy as the young man was tackled and restrained by his own lawyer and the DA. I found myself reaching to the small of my back for my HK, but I CAN'T CARRY IN A PLACE WHERE NUTS LIKE THIS GO OFF!!![:(!]
I could go on, but am tired of typing.

The United States is one of the few places left where anyone with enough ambition can still make his fortune and a lack of education is not going to stop someone with enough ambition and drive to get rich. I know many of these people and there are a few who are my neighbors. Examples are the wacky guy next door who owns a couple of surf shops or my friend Cliff who started out as a garbage man, bought the truck, expanded the business and eventually turned it into a huge recycling and trash collection empire stretching into four counties. One thing I do know is that everyone of these self-made men who lacked a formal education has made sure that his children received the finest education possible.0 -

An interesting point. You can also own 2 surf shops and be educated. A degree will never HURT your opportunities.
