Illegals Let Go in Burke County
A frustrating day for deputies in Burke County. They caught 11 illegal aliens caught along Interstate 40 and all eleven had to be let go.
Immigration officials told them they had too many cases to deal with so Burke county authorities say they had no choice but send the group on its way.
Steve Ohnesorge has the story from Burke County.
They were stopped at the eastbound Jamestown Road exit because deputies on patrol couldn't see a state name on the temporary tag.
As they approached the SUV they saw several men lying down in the back and a crowd coming out of the vehicle.
Ten adults and a one month old baby. According to deputies the driver admitted everyone in the vehicle was illegal.
All were from Mexico and they weren't happy with the prospect of going back.
The group had been on the road for eight days. They didn't have much money with them and a long way to go. They pooled what money they had to buy the suv in Phoenix last week. They said they are heading to Buffalo, New York to find work.
Manuel told WBTV it is not his first time here. He said he has been in the U.S. for six months.
He was caught and deported last year and is facing the same thing again. Deputies called immigration authorities and brought the jail van in too.
One deputy said they were "goning to transport them to Charlotte and ICE will take care of them from there."
Or so they thought. A short while later, immigration officials called back to say they couldn't take them, "due to overwhelming cases right now."
The county jail was the only option left. However, there isn't any room at the county jail to hold them. So as has been the case before they had no choice, but to turn them loose.
Sadness turned to smiles on the faces of the illegals. But for the deputies it was pure frustration.
One said it's an "everyday job out here."
With a quick wave they were on their way their trip north could continue.
Deputies say without a serious charge or help from immigration officials they couldn't take the group into custody. But say they'll be back on the road on the road tomorrow and try again.

Are they stocking them now? They are so plentiful already...they are going to take the sport out of it, if they are not careful.0 -
I have literally had to let more than 100 go in past years, not all at once. Thankfully, this does not occur any longer in my agency.
The area USBP Station is the fastest growing in the nation and we do not get turned down any longer when we call for assistance.0
