When I switched from Direct TV to Dish Network this past February, I had to give Dish Network a credit card number---eventho, I pay the bill online with a bank draft. Anyway during registration, Dish Network asked if I wanted BlockBuster Online----I said NO! Two months later I start getting emails from BlockBuster Online about my account and they sent me (unsolicited) 3 DVD's. Then I get my credit card statement with a $19.95 membership charge (monthly charge) for BlockBuster Online. After some phone calls, I found out that Dish Network had registered me with BlockBuster Online and had given them all my personal info including my credit card account number. By then, BlockBuster had charged me $21.95 each for the 3-DVD's. After contacting a Supervisor at BlockBuster Online and a Supervisor with Dish Network and many choice words from me, all credit card charges were dropped. I filed a formal complaint with Dish Network against the idiot that originally took my order.

I'd already contacted my credit card company and advised them that I was not paying any charges from BlockBuster Online. I also went to the local BlockBuster store and closed my account with them. Idiots!

you were calling from your home phone #, the cable co. has it on caller ID, so they check w/ the credit card issuer (who verified that as your home phone or else they wouldn't give you a card) so the charges go through.

the point being, they don't have to worry about credit card fraud as long as they're being called from the cardholder's home phone.

    they know who you are.

Tell the companies to produce the law that requires them to take a person's ssn...they cant do it...

I think they use that number to check your credit to see if you will pay them. So if you give them a bogis number you may not get an approval.

Once a company gets big it doesn't seem to care about whether they sign you up or not, they get too big for their britches.

But then if you don't have any credit cards and don't give them access to your checking account you can't get hurt too bad!

....I always refused and told them to show me the Law that states I had to, NOT their policy, but the law...they couldn't. That was a LONG time ago, never gave it to them.

...Hell, just go to a flea market and buy a fake one like the illegals do, and use that, works for them. Really mess with 'em and have the card printed up with a name like Pasquali Umberto Jimmenz...[^]

You know, I found out you can make up a fake name and information other than the address on magazine subscriptions. Fill them out, and check the bill me later option. You never pay, but even though they send random people who don't exist collection letters for $15, and probably call and harrass people in other states, they never stop sending you the magazines ;)

I went to get a haircut at sports clips the other day, and they asked me for my information. I asked why a hair salon would keep a customer database... "I pay $15 and get a haircut, I don't care about their statistics and databases. Either take my $15 and cut my hair. Or I'll go get a haircut somewhere else." I got my haircut ;)

Yea, I don't give out my social, and I'm very weary about giving my information. Alot of those systems aren't protected, and they literally just hire people off the street for their call centers. I've worked for Cingular, Grande, Time Warner, AT&T Wireless, and Nextel doing customer service or tech support. And believe me when I tell you, there is always one or two people there copying your information and credit card number for unethical or even criminal purposes. I've actually confronted a supervisor because a co worker was bragging about a book of credit card numbers he had, and that individual got fired. But believe me there are lots of them. No criminal background checks. Litterally just hire a body to answer the phone. I would rather give a fake social security number and I never ever ever give a debit or credit card over the phone. Your actually much safer giving your credit card information online to a computer than over the phone to a person...

    *sigh*

I distinctly remember trying to get out of giving my SSN to the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles.

No number, no learner's permit, so I caved.

dang it, I went to get cable ISP but they wouldn't sign me up without getting my social security number. too bad, so sad, they don't get my business. problem is, there's nobody else to give it to so I can't get cable internet.

gas company wouldn't give me service without my social security number. until I raised a stink and contacted the public utilities commission, then I got hooked up without it.

phone company wouldn't do it either. I had to give them my social security number.

you can't rent a house/apartment unless you give them your social security number.

you can't go to college without giving them your social security number. what happens when you have kids and send them to grade school but refuse to give them your kid's social security number? would they refuse to enroll your kid?

I think you have to have a social security number to get a driver's license. if you do have one, I don't think they'll give you one without it.

this is stupid. social security numbers aren't supposed to be used for anything else BUT social security.

but they all got your information, keyed off of your social security number. so they can all snitch on you to each other. they sell it and all your other information that goes with it.

you know where it goes? places like http://www.peopledata.com

did you know there's some company in florida that when you go to get a job, this company tells the employer every place you've worked at before? did you tell anyone, including any employer, that they can give that information to them?? nooooo. how did they get it? nobody's going to tell you, but they got it all right. without your knowledge. without your consent. and your prospective employer sure as hell won't tell you they're going to check with that company first before they hire you, cuz you could sue the hell out of that company for giving out your information without your consent, or even for getting it in the first place, and you could sue the hell out of your previous employer for giving it to them. and they don't want that cookie jar busted.

they want your information so they can have it. once they get your name or phone number, they can look up your social security number (yeah, that george smith at _____ street) and from there they know everything you bought with a credit card, your driving record, your criminal record, your hobbies, your past and present employers, who you're married to, who your family is, your credit score, blah blah blah

and once they get this facial recognition technology going, you go into a store and buy something, one time they'll match your face up with your identity, it goes in THE database and from there on out, you walk into a store and they know everything about you already.

we're all just sheep. we mean nothing to them. they do whatever they want behind your back because you can't do anything about what you don't know.

    and they're doing it.

Sure you can do all that without a SSN, you just have to be an illegal. Hell, you can get in-state tuition for college, live in Mexico and cross the border daily to attend an American school, all without a SSN. You can even get credit cards without a SSN.

    Try THAT as a citizen.[;)]
