pepto-bismol for a dog ???
well a few days ago my dog stopped eating . took her to a vet ,she says the dog has an upset stomach . well when i'm feeling like that a tums or a shot of pepto usually helps out .
anybody been here before ? can i give the dog a spoon of pepto ? the doctor recommends bland food (pasta, burger ) the dog wants nothing to do with them . before this she (10 yr old doberman) was on a strict dry dog food diet ,so any people food was consummed fast .
help,wrench !!

I think I would see another vet. It could be an upset, but it could be something serious.
Has the dog been peeing and pooping normally?
Never give a dog human medicine without the OK of a vet.0 -
peeing ok , of course she not pooping as usual.not much there to work with.
we did do blood work on her and it was pretty normal with a touch of liver enzimes in the stomach .she said that is causeing the upset stomach.
the pitty is other then not eating the dog looks and appears fine .

I know Pepto is fine. My vet has said to use it a time or two. I dont know about a tums though. I know for my lab he gets 2 teaspoons every 4-6 hours when he has issues. 0 -
good ,i am going to give her a dose . she is a little smaller then a lab so i'll give her a lil less .she weighs 74 lbs now.

My lab is on allergy shots, so very skinny right now, and the dose I gave you was for a 70 lb dog.0 -

Do we want to know how you know what pink poop tastes like? [xx(]0 -
ALERT! 21st Century is HERE!
Pepto now comes in "easy to swallow" caplets. Just ram'em down poochies throat and fuggedaboudit!0 -
the vet put my dog on pepcid, half a tablet every day to reduce the vomiting, she was doing every day, works like a charm. I suppliment her dry food with a few table spoons of cooked hamburger, that seems to have licked the problem. I think dry dog and cat food creates alot of problems . He also put our cat on no dry food at all straight beef or lamb, the cat was barfing all the time on dry food. no problems from either one now 0 -
Did the vet take x-rays? And can she (the dog) hold any food down? If not I'm backin up nunn on this one....see another vet! Now!
I'm assumeing that the vet as a matter of course recommended x-rays but some vets don't take the time to explain just how important this is. Just tell you that they are available and what it costs and leave it up to you.
Hope she feels better.

update . i gave her 2 teaspoons of pepto . no change yet .
i have capsules but the liquid could not be spit out as some animals do . she dont like pills and knows how to loose them .
tried to manually feed her by putting some various dog and people foods into her mouth .she just waited till i let her mouth go then spit them out . i have pepsid maybe ill try them . i have a script for them due to my stomach .she is drinking water well ,food just doesn't appeal to her , it even seems to annoy her .
our vet is off for the weekend so i'll take her in the morning for the second opinion and the xrays .she has script for us ready .
i wonder if she (dog) is giving up ?

If you do, when you have an upset stomach, take some PEPTO BISMOL!0 -
We have always given cattle pepto when they bloat, works like a charm. 0 -
I would use Pepto Bismol without worrying. I once took my dog to the vet when he was having diarrhea problems and he gave me some tablets that cost $4.00 each, I checked them and they were just over the counter Lopramide anti diarrheal tablets. So now if he has a problem he gets a half tab. I have known people that have given their dogs aspirin for arthritis, but I think that's pretty dangerous for the dog.
For bland food that the dog will love, cook her a couple of eggs. It'll be a treat for the dog and it's very nourishing.0 -
my vet told me to give tums also (for something else) so it must be ok. he didn't specifically say "pepto bismol" so I can't say that's ok or not.
if she won't eat pasta or cooked hamburger, there's something wrong with that. if the pepto bismol doesn't work and she still doesn't want to eat anything, I'd get right back to the doc and see what's going on.
ask the doc how to tell if she's nauseous, not just upset stomach. if she's nauseous and has a headache, those are symptoms of poisoning, just to cover more bases.0 -
Try putting the pill in peanut butter. That usually works as it is hard to seperate. Good luck hope she feels better soon. 0 -
wrench... last night I was thinking about this and remembered my Catahoula going through something odd about 2 months back. He is not a "foody" type dog so when he didnt show any interest in his food for a couple of days it didnt worry me too much. But after 3-4 days he started walking funny and whined anytime he sat down. He showed some real distress when ever he attempted to sit. I finally got him to lay down but he could not get comfy at all. This was late on a Friday night and although I know my vet well and she is 100% ok with calls at home, I figured I would see what happened over the next few hours. It seemed to get worse so I put on a pair of latex gloves and did what I had to do. He was simply compacted. It was NOT a fun task but after we got him cleaned out within 1 hour he wanted food.
Dogs are not stupid... he knew that if he put anything else in there it was just going to hurt more.
Now, Dont consider giving your dog an enema! Those can cause some real health issues!
I hope she feels better soon.0 -

update ---
a few hours after i gave her the pepto my wife came home with a bag of mcdonalds . once in a while she used to treat the dog with ice cream .so i asked her on the way home from work to stop and get her a vanilla shake .i was hopeing to get her to eat anything . well she slowly ate half of the shake . good sign we thought . then we tried the buger , we gave her half and she ate it . we waited a few minutes then she ate some more . she seemed to feel a little better .
in the morn once again she not wanting food . i gave her another dose of pepto,2 hours later she was wineing to my wife . yep she was hungary again .i just got home from work now ,she not eating so i dosed her with pepto and waiting .she was craving tons of water but has calmed down some with that .
i am wondering now if she was poisened with something . i have heard that those swifter wet mops are toxic to animals ? well my mother in law uses one and we visited her last week . dont know for sure if its true about the mop thing ,i 'll snopes it .

My parents' dog (dachshundt) had a minor back problem awhile back. He was given a shot by the vet who also recommended they give him 1/4 piece of a children's chewable asprin rolled in peanut butter. Peanut Butter works like a charm. 0 -
Don't know about dogs, but my nieghbor gave some (about 1/4 bottle) to a calf the other day with no problems. 0
