knee replacement
My wife has to have knee replacement. Anyone here gone through it? Any tips or tricks that will help me help her through it?

Anyone had this procedure and then gone into a rebid facility? Wife had this done and has been in rehab for 2 weeks come Thursday. They now want to keep her another week (3 weeks total) I'm not looking for medical advise but just some comments from those that may have gone this. Thanks 0 -

i am going to have to have BOTH KNEES replaced. i am scared to death to have it done, but i know it must happen. i was alright with the issue till i asked the doctor what happens when your body rejects the implants. he told me that he would have to operate again and put in a substance he would call cement,keep me on antibotics for six weeks then operate again and reinstall the parts and if that didn't work then there would be amputation of the legs. my question is since i am so afraid of going to the hospital, should i have both knees done at the same time? i know of a couple of people who have both done at the same time that said they had no problems. has any of you had one or both knees replaced ? PLEASE give me just the feelings that you went through. i really dont need a bunch of B.S. at this time [:(] 0 -
for those of you who had read my previous post know what i am talking about. well the time has come. i can no longer stand the pain. i went to the doctor last week and he told me it was time to do the surgery before i have more nerve damage.i guess i am going to have it done. i have been to the pre op. class where they give you exercises to preform for a week before the operation, let me tell you they hurt like heck.i have to be in the hospital in the morning at 6:00 am and surgery is scheduled for 7:30 am. doc said it would take about 1 1/2 hours to do. doc also said about four hours after the operation there will be someone to get me out of bed to MAKE ME WALK. i'll be in the hospital for three days if everything goes ok.
physical therapy will be three days a week. i'll miss you guys and gals. just in case i dont get out you all have a MERRY CHRISTMAS and for some HAPPY HOLIDAYS[:o)]0 -
The pain is not really bad. It hurts but only about a 4 or a 5. If i sat in a recliner all day like they told me too it would be a lot easier.
However the swelling is terrible. The other thing that sucks is you can not speed up recovery.[:(]
It is better than the old knees though.0 -

I don't think too well at all.
Surgey went fine I'm told.
I had my first epidermal ---strange,
---strange,---strange,---strange feeling.
Pain is down around sometime before I went
to the hospital.Therapy folks are great people
but a bit too tortuois for me but if I can walk the
woods this years and years to come.It'll be worth it to me.

I have had two good friends that had them both done at the same time. My buddy Richard walked out of the hospital after the surgury, he has been like new since then. It was a bit rougher for Frank as he was laid out for 5 or 6 days, he now works as a greater for Bass Pro and he is on his feet for 8 hours everyday with no pain. Get them both done, you will be fine. 0 -

My Father in law had it done last July. He's prob. 75lb overweight, and he was on his feet in a day too.Go for it man, you won't be sorry.....Best to U JW..

Are they doing full knee of partial knee. Watched some commercial on TV where they can save 1/2 the knee instead of full replacement. Either way sounds complicated. Good luck. 0 -
Don't worry about it, I have talked to a bunch of people who have had the operation done and EVERYONE of the them said that they should have had it done earlyer. The reason I ask around is that I am also going to have to get it done on both of my knees. The doctors told me when I was 21 that I wouldn't be able to alk by the time I turned 30 and I'm 35 now. I do OK but the pain really starts to get to me some days.
So just get it done and all will be fine, you will be glad you had it done, but you will hate yourself for waiting so long.0 -
have a friend that had both done at same time primarily because both were in the same condition & to do one would have been out of synch for the healing & rehab time...he was down to couldn't get around & said the recovery was a little tougher than he expected but he has played cowboy all his life & accumulated a lot of abuse all over...i know you have done all the necessary research for your health care to reach this decision & the chances of your worst fears or very, very slim....wish you the best & keep in touch 0 -

i have to have the full knee[:(] i have been through all the shots they can give me . the doctor tells me it's up to me as to how much pain i can stand, as to when i want to have the operation done[:(][:(][:(]0 -
My dad had his left knee replaced about 5 years ago. It took about a week for him to recover from surgery, and a couple more weeks of physical therapy, but he said it was all worth it, because there was no more pain.
You have to go into it with the attitude and mindset that you'll be better than you were before, and that you can overcome the limitations of the post-surgery pain/discomfort.0 -
Your biggest worry is infection.
One of the biggest knee replacement facilities was shut down, I believe last year, for a brief period.
I think it was in Colorado, but am not certain.
How far are you willing to travel for this?
A 70 year old friend of my mothers, that was going to undergo this, ended up having "partials", and resurfacing of the joint done, and is doing very well, and walks like she was 30 again.
The most important thing is where it is being done.
I will be facing this most likely within 10 years.0 -

As I sit here typing, My wife is just ten days out of a full knee replacement - she just had her staples (24) taken out. She is walking now a little gingerly without her walker for short distances around the house. She uses her walker for out door jaunts like to the Physical therapist, and to her Follow-up appointment at her Doctor's. The operation was really much faster than I expected it to take - just about one hour. My Aunt has had both knees done, and she has only been on them for about eight months - she says that she doesn't even think about her knees - it is just like when she was fifteen years younger - no pain, and no thought about the knees. She wishes she had done them earlier. Wife has been off all painkillers for three days already. First week is a little rough, but after that it get s a little better every day. Gotts 2 go - wife has placed her dinner order, and I gotta go and get cooking!
Good Luck! All will go well. I have acid sweat, and a sensitivity to all metals you can think of against my body, all except Gold and Titanium. Teflon is in lotsa bodies, and a vanishingly small few are allergic. I'll bet you have no trouble.0 -
I don't know where you live but my mom had one done about 2 years ago and the other done about 5 months ago in Plano,TX. She wished she would have done them both at the same time as she had VERY LITTLE recovery time on both. She was up and walking the day after with either one. She swears up and down if you have a good doctor and need it done DO IT. 0 -

Almost 20 years ago had a Navy orthopedic doctor tell me that I'd be needing knee replacement in 15 years, he's not too far off, that'll happen fairly soon. Got a shoulder with a lot of arthritis that has had shoulder replacement mentioned. Just wearing out I guess.0 -
We have a tenant here in Asheville who had a knee replacement.
She now has one titanium knee. She said it was real painful for a few weeks, but now it feels great. Had the surgery a year ago. She is 63 years old.0 -

Jim.one of my neighbors..[lady] had both knees done at the same time..because of injuries in a car accident..the first week was rough for her.,we helped her out all we could in and out of the house,..she is doing fine and has returned to work as an RN full time,..she was off for 4-5 weeks and says she would do it over in a heart beat..prayers sent from here bro..hold your head up high..you will do just fine..after all you are a MOUNTAINEER!...[;)][^]..Loko 0 -

I worked in PT as an aide in the hospital...
I'd avoid having both done at once. As for a PT consult *now* before the operation to learn the exercises, etc. that you will *have* to do post op. All simple stuff, but having things in good shape before surgurey makes a world of difference for recovery.
IF YOU DO NOT DO EVERYTHING YOUR PHYSICAL THERAPIST RECOMMENDS, IT WILL SUCK.
It will hurt. You won't like bending the knee, but you must do it. You must push your range of motion, etc. as much as you are allowed to. You should get up and walk as much as you are allowed to, etc.
One guy I remember working on/with said that what we put him thru with PT was "worse than what the Germans did to me when I was a POW". But he was back to have his other knee done 6 months later.
Have 'em done in 2 different fiscal years too, you get the tax break (medical costs) twice.
Oh, and I'm 36, when I was 14 I damaged both knees, doc then said I'd need to have 'em both replaced by the time I am 45...0 -
What do you mean when you say that "you know it must happen"? Are you in pain? If so, how much, and just ho debilitating is it? You want to make absolutely certain that knee replacement is absolutely necessary first.
My mother had one of her knees replaced when she was sixty-five. After three months she was fine and lived another fifteen years with no knee problems. Then I had a friend in his early sixties who had both knees replaced at the same time.
If you do decide to have this done, make sure that during your therapy that you "diligently" practice getting the full range of motion out of the joint, or suffer having to re-do it. You should be just fine.0 -
My dad had both of his knees replaced in 03. It got to the point where he could either have the surgery, or have a wheelchair. He didn't hardly leave the house they hurt him so much to walk on. They were just bone on bone, no cartilage at all. This man has endured some serious pain in his life, but he said nothing could ever compare to knee replacement. It hurt me to sit with him in the hospital and just hear him softly moan. He was in the hospital about 2 weeks and then went to physical therapy for a few months. After about a year he had no pain and could get out and exercise and do the things he wanted. He has a really bad back from a mining accident but the knees were what hurt him most. Now his knees work as good as mine.
The surgery they do now isn't nearly as bad. I believe you can be out of the hospital in just a couple days. I don't think they cut all the nerves like they did with his. He also said if he hadn't got them both done at the same time, he would not have went back for the second. He couldn't put himself through it again.

Good luck to you. I had both my hips resurfaced/replaced 4 years ago. They were done 6 weeks apart. My Dr. is part of the SIU Medical Clinic in Springfield, IL. They have come a long way with resurfacing/replacements. Check all of your options before you do anything. You will never no how much pain your dealing with now until after the surgery. 0
