Obese Dogs
I have seen many threads on dogs, there being an obvious bond between the owners and the animals. I have two small dogs, one is a Chihuahua plus some other unknown mix around 11 years old about 9 pounds, the other is a full blood Fox Terrier going on 5 years old weighs around 13 pounds. We live on a substantial amount of ground, they are never leashed, do their regular Chipmunk patrols, chase Squirrels, get sufficient exercise.
The Fox Terrier has had a weight problem since he was a puppy, the Chihuahua stays constant in weight. Both get the same type and amount of food. The Fox Terrier has been on Thyroid pills for a considerable amount of time, really has not made any noticeable difference on reducing his weight.
Last month around the 21st the Vet gave me a prescription of Slentrol, some may be aware of it as I understand it is rather new prescription, I had no idea of it being available as a weight reduction and weight control for dogs. Started out giving the Fox Terrier a measured daily amount orally for two weeks followed by an increase. This past Friday the scale at the Vet's showed he had lost a half pound, it was also visible as he had tighten up. Vet lady was real pleased (me too), I think this was the first small dog she had prescribed for. Doesn't sound like a lot, when the shoulder height is about 8 inches and a small volume dog, it is a fair amount
She advised there are no after effect or any other problems with the prescription she knew of. She has found some dogs can't tolerate it right off, they may throw up, have diarrhea or both. It is given regularly until the dog reaches the desired weight, then is given on spaced intervals to maintain the weight.
I have tried diets, amounts of food and types of food of which none have had the results of Slentrol. I found a link posted below that might be of interest for those having an obese dog and haven't had much luck with controlling the obesity. Stating the results maybe a little premature, but up to this point if the dog doesn't lose any additional we have at the very least gain a little ground, I believe it will be successful.
