    Slow Hand:

I would very much like to see a world in which corporations sponsored entertainers on the basis of some principles.

But it doesn't work like that. Corporations sponsor entertainers who are popular, because corporations improve their image by associating themselves with popular entertainers.

When those entertainers become unpopular--and especially when they become unpopular in a spectacular way (like Imus)--then corporations bail out.

It's all about money. The first amendment has not been insulted here. Common decency has been insulted on a number of levels, but nobody has had their right to free speech infringed.

It's ugly, but it's all legal.

And now for a radio man's perspective:

Radio is a business. If what we do causes advertisers to pull their sponsorship, adjustments have to be made.

The First Amendment only protects us from prosecution.
It doesn't guarantee us a paycheck.

Life's a gripe when you don't pay attention to what you're saying.

Them's the cold, hard facts that I've learned during a lifetime on the air.

exactly what is a "war leader" ??

Follow me when the balloon goes up and find out. Don Imus can still fall back on secondary career as a board member of the HeMan Woman Haters Club.

I heard the CIA used its mind beams to MAKE IMUS say racist statements on the air. He was going to reveal Elvis' location, so they had to take him down.

Seriously, how f@#$$ing stupid do you have to be to push this kind of BS conspiracy theory?

Like *IMUS* has the "inside poop" on 9-11? Why is EVERYTHING about how "evil" the Bush administration is?

S@#$$. . .Rosie O'Donnell just said that fire can't melt steel, and that the Iranian hostage incident was caused deliberately by the USA, and SHE still has HER job.

Its not like EVERYTHING that happened here with Imus didn't happen publically.

Imus, who has a LONG HISTORY of making inflammatory remarks (some of which are deliberately hilarious, and many of which have landed him in hot water before) took a cheap racist shot at targets he didn't really have a right to be shooting at.

Then, he did the politically correct thing (apologizing and grovelling) instead of the doing the tactically correct thing (apologizing, but going on the attack and calling out Sharpton for being an inflammatory race-baiter).

"I'll apologize to the Rutgers basketball team, but not to the likes of Sharpton".

Well, he pushed the wrong button at the wrong time and got fired for it. I don't think it was the first time that it happened to him, and its an occupational hazard of being a "shock jock".

His employer wasn't willing to go to bat for him this time.

As to his future, not that I care much since I've never liked him or his show, but Imus is talented enough and has a big enough audience (two features that are relatively unusual in radio) that he could come back. Maybe not as big as before, maybe not in quite the same venue, but he

My following reply is indeed sarcastic but definitely not aimed at anyone in particular here on GB.

I don't disagree with that comment per say, but these same unsympathetic corporate dandies have eagerly shelled out their stockholders' big bucks to have Imus and other shock jocks rant and insult a littany of other people in far worse terms without so much as a peep or blink or a demand for an apology.

And if you haven't followed Imus over the years then you simply are not aware of the many outrageous insults he has already hurled - often repeatedly - at lots of other truly "fine people" without getting fired and without the recent bru-ha-ha.

Former General Colin Powell was called a "weasel" by Imus on a few broadcasts. Uh, gee, isn't Mr. Powell also black? Oh, that's right, he's a Republican and Conservative and a former Bush cabinet member. I forgot.[;)]

Why then were the suits in such a rush now? Why the bravado?

I believe we all KNOW exactly why and that's the real issue for me.

And so, the 1st Amendment WAS kidnapped in a very deliberate way IMHO.

BTW and FWIW, I don't see where any sponsors pulled the plug on "The View" for Rosie's comments. Or demanded an apology. Or where Rosie was asked or forced to apologize to anyone she may have offended with her outlandish accusations and shrewish diatribes. Oh, that's right! Silly me. She's expressing her right inalienable right to freedom of speech.

She's a Liberal, too - right? Just like Imus. Right? [;)] Oh, but I forgot. She's also a lesbian and a mommy. Imus isn't.

Just my 14 cents worth here.[:D]

Freedom of speech means in general that you can say what you want. There are, however, absolutely zero requirements that someone else is required to pay you to say it.

Don Imus can repeat the exact same thing he said before right now if he so wishes, you're just not going to hear it now on somebody else's dime.

Say what you want, just don't tell me that I have to pay for you to do it.[:)]

My 2 cents...Sponsors and CBS were more than willing to let him say whatever he wished...as long as they could make a buck off him...He was only out of line when it might cost them a buck or two....the Bottom Line got Imus fired more than a Racial slur...
