Gunsmiths??
Are there amy real bonafide gunsmiths left in the USA? Have they gone the way of the Automobile mechanic where today all you have are parts changers. I dont mean the guys that replace grips , a screw, or a spring that call themselves gunsmiths. I need one that knows what he is doing and can make me a part.
I just got this gun back after one year, one month, and 8 days from a GUNSMITH" that said he could fix it, I picked the gun up yesterday , and all I got was "I couldnt find the part" I told the dingbat that if I could have found the part I would not of had to bring the gun to him that I expected him to make the part. He said "I tried to make the part, but it broke" , His final comment was "everyone wants it yesterday". Excuse me one year, one month and 8 days aint exactly yesterday...besides that he broke a chunk off the grip cap..GRRRRRRRR

Don't know where you are located, but there is a good gunsmithing school at Murray State College located in Tishomingo, Oklahoma.
Also know one in OKC, but you would have to hand deliver.

Dude the cost of making a part from scratch would make the average gun owner faint!!! Besides it is rare that you can't find a part if you have a few good sources....
Truthfully only a rare or very valuable firearm justifies the cost.0 -

the guy that is teaching (make that TRYING TO teach me) could do it, but his back-log is about a year.
have started to do some of the "parts replacer" work for him to help keep my parts/blueing bill down.
he has just about a ful machine shop in-house and was a machineist up till he retired.
quqite a bit of his current work is de-milling and converting to semi. on m-44s etc. welding torch cut recievers and make everything fit and work is quite a job, but whenhe is done you dont even find a seam!0 -

I use the services of a very good one. I'm not afraid to let him do anything to my best weapons. Being a very good machinist he can make parts. The problem with this guy is the wait. If you get your piece back in as little as twice the time he told you that's as fast as he gets. I learned long ago to just tell him "call me when it's ready", don't bug him, and wait for the call. The last job I had him do was cut and crown a barrel, install sights, and Parkerize a rifle. He tells me "I'll have it done in 6 to 8 weeks". It took 8 months.[:D] The good side is that the work is perfect. 0 -
We had one here but he didn't have his own FFL - he did a very limited amount of work through the shop that is now defunct.
He has his own machine shop and can make pretty much any part one might need.0 -
I know one here in CT. He made his and his wifes high walls, only part he didn't make was the barrel. What needs to be made? 0 -
classic, go to a bonified match somewhere and approach the travelling smith on site. they are paid to get it done and back in the match. follow me? 0 -

The gun is an early Ithaca Flues model. I have look everywhere for the part.
What it is, under the barrel in the barrel lug is a hole with a very tiny set screw in it and a rod shaped something like a very small shovel. This part when the gun is broken open actually contacts the cocking levers and cocks the internal hammers.
I have found several people looking for barrels because this part is missing from their guns also, hopeing that if they find barrels the part will be there.
I used to have the equipment to make parts but got out of doing that many years ago.0 -
Chick Donnelly, of Siskyou Gun Works, in Grants Pass Oregon is the best I've ever known...
He was given all of P.O. Ackley's Barrel making machinery, by P.O.
He was a Master Tool and Die maker for Hughes Aircraft.
He makes/made most of his hand tools, and even they are works of art.
His backlog is longer than he has left, and he only takes jobs that sound "interesting"...
That was a few years ago, since I have talked with him.

Just take the part to a shop that does EDM machining. they should be able to duplicate it with no problem. 0 -
what part do you need made? If you have the specs for it, I can send them to my wife and she can might be able to fabricate it for you.

Therein lies the problem, I dont have the part, I have my feelers out for a picture of it , if ti isnt exact, aint gonna work..I have searched for a schematic for this gun but have found that part not included in any drawings.. 0 -
well, you know your gun the best I suppose. What's the part and gun? I'm sure it's some obscure piece from the 1800s or something I've never heard of lol.. 0 -
Well , o.k. , yes there are some real "gunsmiths" out here ...
we (gunsmiths) are few and very covered up with work . it is hard to believe (but possible) that a smith cant find the part you need ...
By the way , most guns and parts are NOT WORTH the cost & effort to 'make a part' , we seldom will ...

Gee now ABC, don't go spoiling his fun. If he wants to spend $250-500 to have a part designed, built, tested and possibly redesigned/rebuilt/re-tested, with no guarentee that it will work/last any better than the origional one did, just to get a $75 clunker back up and running....... 0 -
Not many gunsmiths left Lary. I am former toolmaker, so I make my own parts. If you're really in a pinch, a local machine shop may be able to help you out. 0 -
