Another Computer question?
I was coming home from the store not long ago and seen a garage sale. I normaly dont pay attention, but I seen a computer setting there. I went back and looked at it and Im sure these people are honest, its a compact Windows 98 with only a 2GB HD and I know nothing about the other stuff but she said it works great and wants $150.00 for it. I thought this was on the high side what do you guys say?

Ok, so I am getting a new computer. I hate all the extra programs and trials they send preloaded. It always takes awhile to disable or delete them and then it still will sometimes try to access them.
I had a virus on the old laptop and reformatted the hard drive and reloaded the programs I wanted and it seemed to work better.
Should I reformat the new computers hard drive as soon as I get it and reload only the programs I want??? This would only be feasible if Dell still sends the disks to do it. Will reformatting help the computer run better and less buggy.0 -

A computer that old has practically zero worth today... unless all you want to do is word processing. $50 max would be my estimate. 0 -
I agree with the other guys.
I remember buying my computer in 2002, completely decked out. It's still fast and runs great, but I paid $2500 for it. I could probably get $150-200 out of it now. Typical electronics.0 -

yup, worthless. if it has a 2gb hard drive, the cpu is maybe up to the 200 MHz MMX class. I'd guess it's about a Pentium 90. even if it was 200 MHz, it's still practically worthless.
a 500 or so MHz computer is the least you want to mess with, and those are completely obsolete. plentiful, but obsolete. something like that should be worth, realistically, about 20$ to someone who wants it.0 -
Thank you all, Im glad I stuck to my gut feeling about it.
I was thinking of getting it for my nephew to play on, but we may have found an old one for him. I dont need one for myself would like to have one of the new Laptops, 2 yrs mine is out of date. I have a Dell Laptop 80GB HD which isnt much now, my wife bought a new Gateway Desktop to do her work here at home on and it has a 200 GB Speed Drive(whatever that is). I know everything is about 3 X what mine is, when I bought mine it was top notch then. My wife donated her old Gateway to a local Home for boys. Amazing how fast things change.0 -
I still use my Pentium 2 400 Mhz laptop; I replaced the hard drive with one with a faster scan rate and more space, quadrupled the ram, installed a wireless card and loaded it with XP. It came with Win 98 when I got it used in 2003.
SO LONG AS I DON'T FILL IT UP WITH JUNK i.e. a thousand useless programs and use it ONLY for word processing and surfing the net, it is a fast, nice little machine.
In short, I paid $400 for it in 03 and sank $50 in parts into it bought cheap on ebay...to have a cheap, old computer with limited use. However, for what I use it for, and considering I have a fairly new desktop (late pentium 4), it is fine, and was well worth the $50 in upgrades to keep it useful to check email and type while on the road.
Just sharing; I too say $150 was too high. $150 would be ok for a P3 500 MHZ or up with at least a 10 gig HD, but still not great.0 -

that would be size rating not speed, the older pc's {some current laptops}have 5400rmp hard drives, most common today is 7,200, you can get 10,000, and 15,000 rmp hard drives, today it is all about size, the speed of your hard drive is the most important "overlooked" factor today, the seek time on a 10,000 rpm hard drive is 2x faster than a 7,2000 -

+1. There is no way to know if the CPU actually contains all the components the seller claims it does... unless they allow you to take it apart before you buy it (which would be more effort than its worth). It would be easier to just build a new computer yourself, using known components.0 -
