    This is symptomatic of what's wrong with sports at the high school and college levels. The lure of big money and the debauchery of the various individuals associated with sports has long surpassed any integrity these games may have once had. Dreams are bought and paid for upfront nowadays, not realized over a career through hard work and discipline.

    I don't think so. The NCAA has to wait for a report from USC before they investigate it. I am sure that USC has been working on this report for a while. If for some reason USC is not investigating, the NCAA does not like that at all. You can see examples of much stiffer punishment towards the university by looking at Michigan and Alabama as examples. The schools did not investigate claims such as this like they should have. Michigan has taken a beating in basketball since their titles were stripped. Alabama has been downn on scholarships for several years, and you just can't have that and be able to compete.

    It will probably be a year from now or so when the NCAA has time to investigate it throughly. Bush will likely be stripped of the heisman and USC will loose a few scholarships.

    As far as I know Reggie Bush is in NO danger of any punishment. Even if he took money or gifts he did nothing illegal. However, USC can be sanctioned if it is determined they knew AT THE TIME that Bush was receiving gifts or money. Every majoy college has a compliance department and apaprently USC's is very big and sophisticated. It sounds like USC did not know of any wrong doing but when they heard rumors they immediately contacted the NCAA.
    I seriously doubt Reggie Bush is worried about anything. Even if they strip his Heisman trophy he still makes $15 million a year and thats all they care about.

    The bigger question is will USC get the Death Kneel that was given to powerhouse teams like Oklahoma, SMU, and, I believe, one in Michigan.

    You might well be right, a slap on the wrist for USC would not surprise me as the NCAA does oten practice double standards.

    SMU football is the only team to ever receive the so-called Death Penalty from the NCAA. The football program has yet to recover from it. And no, USC will not receive the death penalty from this.     You might be right. USC officials will do everything they can to stop, or curtail, an in depth investigation of the like into their program which has been known to turn up more violations. I don't think the NCAA wants to make USC another team like the Washington Huskies, who have not been the same since their last meeting with the NCAA.

    I heard on the radio this morning that USC denied Bush a sideline pass for the Rose Bowl game. I guess they are trying to distance themselves from him.

    While you might be right about trying-to-distance themselves from him, USC made it clear that only 5 passes of the kind are issued each year, and that seems to be on a first come, first served basis. Bush, I think, waited until the week before the game to ask for such a spot.

    This one won't get swept under the rug. I believe that Reggie will lose the Heisman. If so, it will go to the runner up, that big quarterback from Texas.
    USC will get some pretty tough sanctions.

    i dont think usc will get any sanctions. everything i read said that usc wasnt aware of any violations and when they did become aware of them they reported it immediately. if i was usc i would sue Bush for $20 million

    Young deserved it from the git go anyway, my opinion. I think he is the most complete footabll player in the history of the game, hands down. I hope his career is as long and fruitful as one could ever hope to have.

    I agree. It was pretty telling when, on the most important play of the year for USC (the 4th down play in the 4th quarter with USC up by a few points and trying to run out the clock) that Bush wasn't even in the game! Young then came back and won the game at the end. A great, great performance!

    I don't think USC will receive more than a slap on the wrist. Most of all this money was transferred through Reggie's step-father. The university can't be expected to keep up with all the slimy relatives a player has. The only thing that might "grab" USC is the time-line of all this. ESPN reported today that after the alleged payments, Bush's family started traveling very extravagantly to all away games. That they probably should have noticed and questioned, especially considering their financial background. With these BIG MONEY football schools, it is almost impossible to run a perfectly clean program. Too many self-important boosters running around with $100 hand shakes out there.

    My question is, why no charges brought against the people that gave the money? They are just as guilty as the party that received the gifts.

    There's still time to file the charges. The current investigation comes from charges of extortion relative to the "contracts" for agent services. Some tapes have turned up with some pretty damning conversations on them.

    In this case I believe the investigation is focused on the agent for trying to extort money from Bush.

    This is NOT intended to be a slur of any kind so please do NOT read anything like that into it.

    The fat cats who tempt the naive and highly-impressionable inner city kids - those impoversihed, disadvantaged or without strong adult guidance - should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law for their actions. There is absolutely nothing acceptable about taking advantage of people who do not fully understand or appreciate the gravity of certain situations and the ramnifications they might face.

    Don't underestimate these people. If you talked to them, they might sound dumb, but they are not that stupid. Bush and his family knew that what they were doing was wrong. They just figured they could get away with it.

    Perhpas they (the Bush family) did know but I was speaking more in general terms about the "shenanigans" that go on, especially in college football and basketball. Many times, what sounds legal and okay really isn't. Even folks with lots of education, lots of experience and savvy get hoodwinked.

    You run into some weird things in that arena. My son who is at Notre Dame says they have to be careful what they do even as students and friends of players. If they go somewhere for a sandwich and one of the guys is short of money or left his wallet at the dorm, they can loan him some money if its not an athlete, but it would be an NCAA violation to loan money to a player. It might just be one more way of laundering money from alumni.

    It's a technicality, but the school can get in trouble and the player can be disqualified for something like that.
