I wonder how much of the money that is appropriated for the war in Iraq actually ends up either in Iraq or in the bank accounts of our men and women in uniform. You know, like when you give to charity, something absurd like four cents out of every dollar actually makes it to the cause and the other ninety-six goes to the executives and operational upkeep.

How much of the appropriations actually goes to benefiting the people it should be benefiting and how much winds up as a bonus to some PMC's CEO?

The anti war Feinsteins are bangin' the feeder here also.[;)] The final costs will certainly exceed a TRILLION dollars! What a haul! I assume tax revenue funds it all. Yesterday I sent off checks to the Revenue Departments. OUCH, and you'd think I'd at least get a Thank You card from Raytheon, Halliburton, Senator Feinstein, etc.

    The War in Iraq?

    AKAL Security.

They got over $1 Billion in Federal contracts to replace GI's guarding military installations and guard Federal buildings...in the US and Overseas.

Company started by YOGI BHAJAN, a cult leader that started a muslim-hindu spinoff in New Mexico after coming to the US in the '70's.

Non-profit....religious cult....getting Defense dollars to provide security.......they be the same cult that had the contract to Guard the Federal Building in Oklahoma when it got blown up....they change their name to "AKAL" after that slight failure.

That's where over $1 Billion goes every year.

Amazing, that says it all. This is, without a doubt, the biggest barrel of corporate "pork" since Viet Nam. Anyone who fails to recognize this is beyond naive.

There is no current funding for the war. It is all being paid for with I.O.U.s. Let our grandchildren pay for it, we need those tax cuts.

There may be no current funding, but the contracts are getting paid now. They're not going to wait for grandchildren to be born, raised, and enter the work force to get the money. Our grandchildren will certainly have to shoulder, as do we, more than their share of a tax burden when their time comes.

    newt,

The debt is shrinking from its record highs. We're still operating at a net loss from when Clinton was in office. He left us a surplus... you know, the opposite of debt?

thats true. he also left a recession and a depleted military. however, i wont defend republicans or democrats on their out of control spending in the last 6 1/2 years. of course republicans should get most of the blame because they had the chance to cut spending and they didnt. sadly, now that democrats are in office the spending wont get any better.

Figures don't lie but liars figure. The debt is NOT going down. The deficit is shrinking which only means we are not going further in debt quite as fast as we were before. How in the world can anyone that supports such runaway spending call themselves a "Conservative"? Are you completely without shame?

These are the debt figures from a few years before Clinton, and until shortly after he left office.

They come from the Treasury Department, but I'm sure some folks have better figures of their own.

Please show me which years it was that the debt went down during the Clinton administration.

Clinton did not run a surplus, that was pure political smoke and mirrors. He simply reduced the deficit by enough that the only borrowing was done internally from organizations like Social Security, but it was still borrowing.

He did a great job of selling the public on the idea that we had a surplus, but it never existed.

Please tell us what the GDP is right now.

The Federal Debt is about $9 Trillion.

Please tell us what the Federal Debt was exactly 36 months ago.....looky at the Trillions lost.

Here's your debt figures for the last few years.

The current GDP projection for the year is running a bit over 13.7 trillion.

Now can you post how they come up with their estimated GDP?

As long as they keep loaning idiots money to blow....GDP is up. Does it mean we are doing good?

""..the welfare of a nation can scarcely be inferred from a measure of national income. If the GDP is up, why is America down? Distinctions must be kept in mind between quantity and quality of growth, between costs and returns, and between the short and long run. Goals for more growth should specify more growth of what and for what.""

That's from the guy that invented GDP....saying what he created was a useless measurement system...to Congress.

You asked for the numbers, I gave you the numbers. If you don't like the numbers, then feel free to invent your own.

GDP is GDP, and it replaced GNP. Nobody "invented" GDP, it just simply "is", just like nobody "invented" temperature, they just found different ways to measure it.

BTW, don't forget that the reason Kuznets became disenchanted was because he couldn't convince people to count items that could not be measured, like the work of housewives, as part of production. It's not that it doesn't have value, it's just that you can't really measure it and assign a real and constant value to it, so it is not counted.

Very cute. Inflate the GDP with massive spending for war & the deficit then doesn't matter. What about the national debt as a percentage of the GDP when the war ends?

  • ObiWan
Kuznets GDP formula requires spending and debt to prove value.

What happens now that there are no more countries to loan us any more money? Does it bother you that our govt. sold debt to foreign countries so that Americans for generations will have to pay to profit the other countries?...not our own.

Take for example the Federal Govt. borrows money from....Japan...then turns around and uses that money to buy Nissan SUV's for the USDA. We pay interest on the loans....we pay them for the vehicles....nothing is helping our economy there. Don't even mention the Buy American Act as that no longer applies to Federal Spending.

Or our Govt. borrows $300 billion from China....uses that money to buy 40" flat screen tv's for govt. offices and computers as well....we pay them interest for their profit...we give them their money back for the goods....our govt. gains no measureable asset as the money was peed in the wind.

According to GDP we're doing good....but when you look at it we're kicking ourselves in the rear and smiling about it.

From 2003-2007 our govt. racked up over $2 Trillion of debt all by itself.

There is only $250 Billion of currency in circulation in the US. Our interest payment on our debt is almost twice the currency we have in circulation.

What does our smartest economists want to do? Cut wages, cut benefits, bring all of Mexico in so we have to support them to boot and give them social security- general fund money, cut our military in half yet again, fire half of all Federal employees, let corporate america move their headquarters overseas to avoid taxes....

They aren't growing our economy. They are destroying it. No more middle class America=no more economy.

You're barking up the wrong tree dimwit. You asked for numbers, I gave you numbers. End, and totality, of the story. At least try to make an effort to get responses to the correct posters.

BTW, most of what you just posted is economic garbage.
