"Firearms as tools for hunting and defense speaks to their heuristic value, certainly, but wholly misses the aesthetic and psychological, which, judging by the number of guns sold vs game tags issued and reported incidents of armed homeowners actually foiling intruders each year, would indicate that use of firearms for stated purpose is a far second to their imagined use, i.e., what they uniquely represent and engender on a very personal level. An H&R Topper and Winchester 21 likely will get done the purpose for which they are designed, as will either a Ford or Ferrari. But what is it about the sound of a 275GTB long-nose or the fit and finish of an old Winchester double that incites imagination and lust far beyond utility and mere assemblage of parts? To me, holding a Colt Model 1911 is a connection to Sergeant York and Belleau Wood and Manila John Basilone, a conversation over cigars with John Moses Browning, a renewed love for my country and a host of other reveries and emotions that certainly cannot be the result of my punching holes in paper with it on a Sunday afternoon. In a sense, guns stand to my daydreams as Walter Mitty's "pocketa-pocket-pocketa" stood to his"...
would you:
(1) excuse yourself and get another drink
(2) nod knowingly and occasionally mutter: "um-hum"
(3) administer the Vulcan death grip to the speaker
(4) honestly admit you had no clue what the speaker was saying.
(5) attempt to come up with something equally erudite and cogent, realizing that to fail would mean ridicule and shame.
would you:

He's saying firearms are not "just tools" as many gunowners contend. You dont think fondly of your screwdrivers or your circular saw (ok, maybe you do, but not in the way you would a firearm).
So, I would probably agree with him. Firearms do have a psychological effect on people.0 -

Absolutely. If you don't understand the term and its usage, make a note to self to look it up at a more propitious moment. If you do understand it, be appreciative of having the opportunity to discuss a topic or two with someone who actually knows what the language is for.

Rob is absolutely correct, you can hunt with a Topper and obtain meat, but you might also get the chance to use a finely crafted piece of art masquerading as a firearm, hunt a veldt of exceptional beauty, and have an experience to go along with the meal.
That is the essence of language in that it adds to the flavor of life rather than placing limits upon it. Anyone can grunt "ain't got none", but the man who can state it in such a manner so as to make you remember he said it and be glad you heard it is an artist.
