TC, have you checked with the ASCS office in your area? They should have a supply of a wildlife seed mix that they will provide you for free. It is usually a combination of sorghum, millet, and buckwheat seed, and provides both cover and food for rabbits, birds, deer, etc. It is usually available in small bags of about four pounds, or larger quantities if you make arrangements to get it.

I have gotten as much as a hundred pounds at one time, and could have had more but I didn't need it. They also have sunflower seeds available on occasion, and those are great for doves.[:)]

Dlrjj, yep, I have applied for everything they have to offer, which is not much for the little guy. If I had a thousand acres and didn't really need it, they would bury me with benefits!! They did look at my place and said I needed nothing but gave my neighbor $4K to build an erosion abatement levee, or some such deal.

Anyway, I am lucky that I have a year round seep that will hold water most of the year. It did not go dry last year. At least the deer have a place to drink in my little hollow. But since this is North MS, there are usually water holes/ponds every few miles. Good browse is what is needed here. Tom

Make sure that you check with them about the seed mix. That should be available to you regardless of the size of fields you have and can be gotten here in my area in virtually unlimited quantities. I've known several guys who picked some up just for food plots they were planting in small clearings in a woods.[:)]
