Gar fishing pics
Went out today to see if I could find some stripers (no, not strippers) and all I caught were these Gar. Never caught them before. Didn't have a net or gloves and the bigger ones cut the line when I got them to the boat and tried to get the hook out with pliers. Lost a few good Rat-L-traps.

Those things are a MENACE. They eat EVERYTHING! When I was growing up, they were sooooooo thick on the Mississippi river. We used to shoot them! Not too bad to eat, but we usually gave them to the neighbor so they wouldn't go to waste.

Pull'em up on deck and wack'em with the edge of the paddle right behind the head. There heads will come off. Fuggin' trash fish. 0 -
Our DNR put them into the Grand River here in Iowa years ago to keep people from hand fishing the big cat fish. Now they are a problem. 0 -

Best (and cheapest)way to catch "GAR" is with a 4"piece of "clothes-line".Cut a 4"piece and melt one end. Then fray the first 3"of the other end.Blood-knot" the melted end to your line, (U can use 12"of 30lb.leader if U like)and put a 1/4oz. split-shot just above the "bug", to aid in casting and to help it sink a bit.Just jig it along below the surface and they'll hit it.[:D]
The fish's teeth get entangled in the "bug" and you got'em...Alott cheaper then RAT-L-TRAPS too...[B)]
