USPS Question-What Form?

If you have an FFL, and want to ship handguns in the mail, does anybody remember what the form number is that you have to fill out with the post office? Thanks, Joe

    You are better off shipping Fed Ex Ground...it's a lot cheaper. USPS insurance is rediculously high

    We just talked to a bunch of different reps and received conflicting information, but after speaking with the "Dangerous Goods" dept, we found out that dealers can ship handguns using ANY AIR service...so you can ship 2 or 3 Day Saver...but not ground.

    Don...we have checked, double checked, and triple checked with the Folks at Fed Ex and they clearly stated that dealers can ship Fed Ex Ground. We've even received handguns by ground from one or two of our wholesalers.

    After reading the info at the link you provided, it would appear that you are correct...however, the wife (who does the shipping) said it has to be 3 Day Saver...Not Ground...I had a rep tell me specifically after checking the regs that ground was OK for dealers.

    Don, Eric is a dealer and shipping to another dealer. Therefore, he can ship via FedEx Ground, as can any other FFL holder. It says so.

    I know Eric is a dealer, I am also, and I know what Fedex says in their published tariffs, I just wonder why the distributors I deal with will only ship HANDGUNS via Next day air?
    I also wonder if fedex will pay off a claim on a handgun shipped via ground, when their published ground service tariffs specifically exclude handguns.

    The wife is on the phone with Fed Ex right now and they are telling her that we absolutely can ship handguns ground or 3 day saver. If you ship express, it has to go over night...but you can ship ground. She's been on the phone with them for 15 minutes while they supposedly checked all the regs...

    Back to the original question. It is PS form 1508 and one must be filled out and presented with each handgun mailed.

    Eric,
    You have to go by their published tarriffs, otherwise, even if they take it, and it gets lost/damaged you might have a heck of a time collecting on the insurance.
    BTW ifyou compare the USPS priority rates, even with the higher insurance, it is cheaper than UPS or fedex air, both have "discount" air services, but IIRC, you have to do a lot of shipping to qualify for it.

    I did not know this either...our post office back east and the one here kept a copy of that form on file for us...we only filled out one.

    Thanks fellas. Didn't want y'all to get into a shouting match over this. I looked at the form, and it indicates that the shipper must write, (or type) a destination address. And the address must match the address on the package to be shipped.

    So, the form must be filled out each time you ship. Looks like multiple handguns in one package only needs one form to be filled out, however. Best, Joe

    I love mailing handguns, it never fails, they parade everybody out to read the manual, they all have their piece of advise, form the janitor to the clerks, then after all that, they get the postmaster, and she gives it the ok......

    I had to show the head clerk the regulations and after a week of her asking post masters she has now became a good freindly help at the PO.
    All six clerks know be by name at the 2 local post offices and I have my own file just for the form 1508

    FWIW, I'm an 03 C&R, and will sometimes mail rifles or shotguns. In a small rural area. Went by the PO at a slow time, asked for postmaster, introduced self, showed copy of license, explained I would be mailing from time to time. Postmaster said no problem, took me out and introduced me to counter staff- and let me know he had 4 other folks in the same category as me. God, I love living in the country where folks have some common sense! [:)]
