Turtle In Yard This Morning
Dawnie called me to come look out the window into the front yard. Said she saw a peacock. (??????)
Then she decided it was not a peacock but a rather large turtle. We all went outside and had a look.

It was a snapping turtle, not huge, but fair-sized. I estimated its shell length was about 16 inches.

Bry and Dawnie took a look at it. The girls, Caitlin and Vanessa, were too scared of it to have their picture made with it.

It did not like being touched or otherwise annoyed by Dawnie weilding a toy sword.

A threatening pose. I tried to get a shot of it snapping its head out in a strike, but was not fast enough on the shutter.

Close-up shots, using zoom of course. A positively prehistoric looking creature.
We last saw it heading north through the drainage ditch in front of the house. I figure it came out of our pond. Something about lots of rain makes these critters try and seek new homes.

Are they out of season in Texas or do you not care for free meat?
Last time I found one of these I gave it to my uncle. Before I left that day he gave me a Browning Lightning 12 ga. Needless to say I've been watching carefully for turtles ever since!0 -

This is the height of Snapping Turtle laying season and they travel away from water to lay their eggs.0 -
Looks like the peacocks we have.

Bry is the cutest ever! I bet he talked about that turtle for hours. My son was all about the cute little bugs at that age. I saw one of these and thought it was a cow patty in the field until someone threw a rock and it took off running. Those things are pretty dang FAST! 0 -
Snappers make good soup!!!!!![:D] 0 -
We have seen quite a few snappers around here lately, it's been really dry and they have been crossing the road trying to find water!!!!

Cool tortoise.
Don't know what kind that is, but he/she is a hefty looking fellow. I have found three in my yard this year, one over 12 inches in length. The big boys don't stand for no caca. Mine backed down 2 cats with a hiss and an open mouth. Now he lets me scratch his head. He is a Yellow Bellied Cooter and has vicious serrated teeth.

My pet tortoise Lucille is a tortoise who wouldn't bite anything but food -

Some tortoises live 75 years and get huge!

I'm thinking serously of giving it a try because I can't see crap any more. If I focus on the front sight, the targer disappears. Naturely, they want to do the most expensive one to me, the crystal lense. $6,000 bucks an eye. I asked them how well I could see if they only did one eye (as a joke) and they gave me a dirty look.
Oh well, I guess, for me, it would be like putting a $100 saddle on a $10 horse anyway. My luck is I would die a week after I had the surgery. Maybe I could get Sandy to harvest them in case she needed them later![}:)]
I'm surprised Dawnie didn't add the turtle to the critter clan![:D]0 -

Turtle too cranky for that. I pulled off a green tree branch about 3/8" in diameter and held it down for the turtle to bite. It had no trouble biting the branch in two. Wait a minute! It can't be the species of turtle it is; it HAS to be the way it was raised! LOL!
Anyhow, on account of the heavy and relentless rains, there have been a lot of ambulatory turtles about. When we find one on the road, usually a red-ear (a slider similar to the one pictured by mateo) we pick it up, bring it home and release it in our pond. I hate to see these poor inoffensive creatures splattered on the highway.0 -
Yep - that's a pretty fair sized 'toe taker' - I've only come across
one HUMONGOUS in our swamp in Mich. when I was a kid -
looked about 40 feet long to me - over my shoulder as I was
scrambling to get out of the water/away from it!
... it was probably a lot smaller than 40 feet BUT that how my
memory still recalls it!
... I can see mistaking it for a peacock - especially if it's snapped and
missed!!

whew, I thought this said "turd" in the yard,, got a little freaked
when I started seeing recipes.0 -
Tastes like chicken. Down towards the Dismal Swamp, we get some the size of a #3 washtub. You use a rifle on those. 0
