Gold over $700.00, anyone here recycling...
electronics scrap? I know MP5Shooter does it, but does anyone else here on the board mess around with it? I do it part-time as a hobby and process around 1-200 tons of large mainframe type computer equipment per year. I think I could still get 5 to 6 times that amount per year if I went out and looked for it, but with the railroad business taking up most of my time, it's hard enough to find the time to process what I do get. So anyone else out there doing it?

Ha! No kidding! As much computer stuff as I scrap per year, my wife's first computer (a Mac 630) is STILL sitting up in the attic. Crazy life ain't it!

I've got a buttload of old CPUs - 386, 486, early pentium, early AMD K5/6 series stuff. All have lots of gold pins on teh back to attach to the cpu socket with, but I'm not sure how to remove 'em. Tried snipping and pliers, too much damage and loss. Could I melt it off wiht a hand held propane torch? 0 -

Don't do anything to them. Just sell them on that bad evil site called E-Bay. Go ahead and search "Scrap Gold" and see just how much these guys will pay for the stuff. It's a great way to help support a gun addiction. Of course, many here hate E-Bay and will not be able to get in on the easy cash that one can make there.[xx(]

And I was going to add that the gold value in cpu's is not just the plated pins, but the Gold bonding wire inside them and the plated caps.

There has been talk about $1000.00 an ounce gold for some time now. We'll see. I have little faith in it getting that high within the next few years. But on the otherhand, short term outlooks are projecting a rush to $800.00 soon. $1500.00 seems lofty, but nothing's out of the question anymore.

It will hold its value as the dollar tanks. So as its dollar value raises, its really reflecting the lessened buying power of the dollar, not an increase in its value. If you want to cash it in you will get way more dollars for it at that point, which should be roughly the amount of dollars in buying power as you got it for in the first place (which, if the dollar continues to devalue, will be a higher number of dollars). If the dollar goes away entirely (obviously more into the future) then it is very possible gold will be tradeable like paper money. 0 -

Not even in the ballpark by a factor of several times on the reserves.
But what the heck do I know, I only work with this stuff for a living, why not ask those all knowing experts like LT, HB, and the plumber.
They know everything and the rest of us are stupid simply because we don't agree with them.

I'd love it if gold went past $1500, but I'm not holding my breath - $720-$750 is about what I think it'll be for the next few years.
Just out of curiosity, what other investments would y'all suggest? Ammo's always a good one, especially with the war, demand, and higher commodities prices driving their prices up. I've already stocked up on a modest amount of gold and silver (it never hurts to diversify).
So what else is there? It couldn't hurt to coner all of one's bases, you know.0 -

Air bag sensors mounted under the front bumper of vehicles have a gold plated ball inside them, held back with a magnet. In a crash it leaves the magnet and makes it's contact for the circuit.

If gold passes $1500 an ounce, I am getting out the sluicebox and pan. Still have a couple of mineral claims in Colorado. When it was $275 an ounce, not worth it. 0
