I've read the docs but I was hoping someone with some personal experience could comment.
Has anyone shipped a handgun/rifle via ups, what should I expect?
Should I leave the packages open to be inspected?
Will they need to see the copy of the receiving ffl dealer?

    I recently shipped a pistol cross country and had to pay UPS $60 for overnight. This seems rather expensive. What are the rest of you using?

    Hello,
    I have a question about shipping firearms. I, recently, purchased a new firearm that needs to be sent back for servicing (at suggestion of dealer) and am unsure of how to ship it. Is it possible to ship the gun myself or easier to ask a licensed dealer to ship the pistol for me? The pistol in question is a Big Bore Bounty Hunter Single Action Revolver .45 calibur. The gun needs to be shipped to EAA, Corp in Cocoa, FL. Any help anyone could provide is greatly appreciated. Thank you

    First off, welcome to the boards. Second, a lot of folks use USPS to ship guns.

    If you can get an FFL on your end he can ship USPS for fair price.

    Non-ffls' can't ship handguns thru the post office. I usually pay a FFL friend to ship mine and give him $20 for his trouble but now he has to pay an additional $10 to register in his name first in Michigan-so it is about $45-$50 total. I'd rather do that than pay UPS for raping their gun shipping customers. This way I reward the gun people and hit the others in their pocketbook. I heard you can now send handguns by second day air UPS in some areas so I think gunowners are starting to make their voices heard.

    I usually still use UPS for long guns-cheaper than the post office.

    USPS for rifles, FFL and then USPS for pistols. Can't send a pistol USPS unless you have FFL/C&R. Other choice is fedex/ups, but due to theft issues they require next day overnight, which is kinda pricey as you've found.

    username- have to disagree on one point- C&R FFL holders (and I are one) cannot use mail for handguns, even C&R handguns. The freakin' ATF rules specify DEALER or MANUFACTURER. Even an importer cannot mail. Ran this question all the way thru BATFE HQ, and they gave me chapter/verse from the regs. Checked my copy, and oh crap, that IS what it says. No mail for us C&R folks except for long C&R guns.
