.22 rim fire

Anyone know what the first 22 rim fire was? And why it was made? A freind of mine asked me these Questions and I did not have an ansewer. I know they have been around for a long time.

  I believe it was French or European "Parlor gun". A gun designed for indoor target shooting w/the equivilent of a CB Cap.
