"For someone your age"

When I was about 19 I was working 65 hours/week one summer at hard jobs. People were commenting to me that I worked so much, so hard, so etc.....and my standard response was: "it's ok, I'm young." Then one day I thought about it. If it was ok because I was young, then it would not be ok if I was old, which bode ill for my later years. I dropped that standard response on the spot and haven't used it since. You're only as old as you'll let yourself be.

I know that the body does its own thing ("this beast I have been inhabiting has begun to betray me"--can anyone place that quote? I think it's Greek mythology), but that doesn't mean you have to ACT your age.

I heard it again from my primary care physician. Initially it was thought I pulled a muscle in my back, but now it looks like one of the plate in my pelvis is degenerating a bit, so it "sprains" easily. Since there is no treatment for it, the doctor says this is to be expected for someone my age (58). If I go to the eye doctor, he gives me a prescription for bifocals and says- you did quite well, you made it into your late fifties before you needed glasses- which is normal for someone your age. I get a physical and various scores are up a bit- you guessed it- that's normal "for someone my age". I guess when I die they'll say- well that's normal for someone his age!!![xx(]

Yup, and at your funeral, people will say "Doesn't he look good"? [xx(]

Dude, I'm 23 and I've got a knee that needs surgery, a permanent future susceptibility to both heatstroke AND hypothermia, and a peptic ulcer. I can only imagine what I'll look like at 58.

I also make do the Old Man Sit. Y'know, when you go to sit in a chair and you gotta use both hands to lower yourself down, and ya make kind of a sighing "Ahhh..." type noise.

    Lessons Learned:
    1)Work smarter, not harder.
2)Hard work done for yourself, by yourself, or for someone you value, should never be considered a burden. Every other kind does nothing but make you old, tired, and broken.

You know you are getting older- it hurts longer than it used to. I mention this since I am currently paying for earlier abuse of my knees and ankles.
