C and R Question

I am thinking about applying for my C&R.... not so much to acquire a ton of guns, but many companies give a discount to holders. Unfortunately my local PD is not all that firearm friendly..... how much of a problem will that create. Also between my father and I we own many guns, and do not actually have a gun safe, but rather converted a walk in closet to house them.... will that present any problems in obtaining a license? Any help and advice would be appreciated greatly... thanks.

You just record them in, and they automatically become yours. As an 03 FFL the guns ONLY go to you; you do not act as a transfer agent for anyone else.

As in, you can't use your C&R to buy other folks guns, or engage in the business of buying and selling, but you probably already know that.[:)]

You'll enjoy your C&R....but your pocket book won't.[:D][;)]

Just to clarify, I never had the thought until now, but I cannot act as a transfer dealer with a C&R right? So if someone bought a C&R gun online it could not be sent to me and then I can charge a transfer fee for the person buying it here right? They would still have to either go to an FFL or get their own C&R right?

That's right. A C&R licence is only for you. You may NOT order for anyone else NOR MAY YOU EVER CHARGE A TRANSFER FEE. To do so would be to engage "in the business".

That is not to say you can't sell one of your collection at some point as long as you intend to upgrade.

As the folks said- when you get your license, it will say in large letters THIS LICENSE DOES NOT AUTHORIZE THE HOLDER TO ENGAGE IN THE BUSINESS OF DEALING IN ANY FIREARMS. Your bound volume should have two sections- acquistions and dispositions. When you get a gun, it goes in acquistions. If you sell one (say, to upgrade you collection) it goes in dispositions. And when you renew your license, the feds will want to know how many you bought, and how many you sold. If you bought 50, sold 45, somebody gonna have some 'splainin' to do.

So what do you have to do to renew? I don't believe I read anything about that. I send in a copy of my bound book records and another $30? Let me know, I am not sure about this one. Or will they tell me when I get the first one?

You don't send them your bound books, but you do send them another $30.

You record the guns you buy. When you sell or trade you enter the disposition info. You keep the book until the license expires then you may destroy it as per ATF rules. That's why I never renew my C&R. I let it lapse and then reapply for a new one. Means I don't have to keep my bound book longer than 3 years.

Diehard- when it is time to renew, you will get a renewal application about 90 days ahead of time. Fill it out , send cc to your chief LEO, and send it with your $30 to the licensing center. You do NOT send them your bound volume. Note to Saxon Pig: That MAY have changed. My last renewal, there was an instruction that if I intended to cease collecting, to send my records in. BTW- do NOT sign your original license- make xerox copies, sign a COPY when making a purchase. DO send a copy to the wholesalers you may want to do business with- once they have on file, you can make phone/internet orders- and many give a discount on non-gun purchases. Discount alone covers your $30. Now get ready to stay cash poor/ gun rich. Some folks poo-poo the C&R license- it does not cover "new" guns. It would take me a full day to shoot the rifles, shotguns, and handguns my license HAS covered- for about 1/5 of the money I would have spent buying the newest fad caliber/gun. Enjoy.
