DC Electrical Question-Night Coyote Hunting

I have a spotlight I can mount on the rifle scope. Painted the lense red with Dikem except the light is still too bright. I can see eyeballs shine on the other end of the field. Consequently, it scares the critter off.

Tell me if I'm wrong here. I think I need an adjustable rheostat to dim the light.

Any suggestions size? style? I don't know what I am looking for and the Radio Shack couldn't help me.

  You can buy commercial hunting lights which are red and adjustable voltage to mount on a rifle. Any of the coon hunting headlights will also mount on a rifle barrel with a bracket available from the manufacturer.
  
  A rheostat will work for what you want to do. I used to use old headlight switch rheostats for projects like this.

  I never thought about that. I think dad has one from a '73 Chevy 1 Ton on the shelf. We swapped cabs 15 years ago and savaged everything from the old cab. I could use it as an off/on and rotate it as a dimmer.
